Ahead of the latest trailer for Matt Reeves’ upcoming reboot of the Batman franchise, the director teased his followers with a first look at one of the most important characters to the comic book hero’s life, Selina Kyle, played by Zoe Kravitz.
Here it is, your first look at Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle…
Better known to both the comic book and Gotham criminal underworld as Catwoman, it was revealed in October of 2019 that Zoe Kravits would take on the role opposite Robert Pattinson’s version of the caped crusader. On Thursday, ahead of DC FamDome on Friday where a new trailer is expected to drop, Reeves took to Twitter to share a photo of Zoe Kravits in character. However, before anyone gets too excited, no, she isn’t in costume.
Instead, Zoe Kravits is pictured from the shoulders up wearing a white tank top, her hair down and heavy eye shadow as she looks ominous at someone in the background. Some online have speculated, due to the gothic-looking window panes behind her, that she is in Wayne Manor. However, the director has confirmed nothing. Still, the brief glimpse is historic for Batman fans as it marks the first clear image of a live-action Selina Kyle since Anne Hathaway brought the character to life in the third installment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy in 2012.
According to Variety, Zoe Kravitz beat out fellow actresses vying for the role of the new Catwoman such as Zazie Beetz of Atlanta, Deadpool 2 and Joker, Baby Driver’s Eiza Gonzalez and Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander.
Fans are likely desperate for any offerings from Reeves’ The Batman. After beginning production around late 2019, it like many other highly anticipated films saw its release waylaid by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, after more than a year and a half of uncertainty, studios are starting to roll out these long-delayed films like The Batman and others in 2022. Still, a good old-fashioned character teaser like Reeves gave with Zoe Kravitz’s character picture goes a long way after months of only an electrifying and action-packed teaser trailer to make The Batman feel like anything close to a reality.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t Zoe Kravitz’s first time playing Catwoman. IGN notes that she voiced the character of Batman’s sometimes villain, sometimes ally, sometimes lover, in The Lego Batman Movie, which likely gave her a leg up over her competition. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Batman-News reports that Zoe Kravitz explained how difficult her training regimen for the film was. She noted that she was working out five days a week virtually with her trainer at the height of the pandemic. She realized, like many of us who went into quarantine, that she was gaining weight because food was all she had to look forward to on a given day. As a result, she decided to get her “s— together” and work out almost every day with her trainer so that she wouldn’t be too far behind when it came time to do the stunts required of her to properly portray Catwoman.
As for how well Zoe Kravitz’s adaptation of Catwoman will be in The Batman, fans will just have to wait until the film hits theaters in March of 2022 to find out.
