Zendaya populated screens around the world in 2021. This year, she saw the release of her movie Malcolm & Marie, she voiced Lola Bunny in Space Jam: A New Legacy, played Chani in Dune, and reprised her Marvel role in the long awaited Spider-Man: No Way Home. As fans are currently seeing her in the Marvel hit, they’re going home and catching up with Zendaya’s hit series streaming on HBO Max. The show is currently the fifth most watched series on the service. It’s no surprise, since Euphoria season 1 was a fan favorite. With season 2 set to premiere on January 9, 2022, it’s the perfect time to catch up on the series.
Euphoria is loosely based on an Israeli mini-series. The project has been helmed by Sam Levinson and first premiered in the middle of 2019. It’s a teen drama series the explores sex, drugs, trauma, and identity. Zendaya plays the lead character, Rue Bennett. She has a history of drug addiction that she is trying to recover from. The series has an ensemble cast that includes Maude Apatow, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Angus Cloud, and Eric Dane.
Season one of Euphoria has been well reviewed. Rotten Tomatoes gives the series an 80% score from critics with audiences pulling in an 85% with well over a thousand reviews. Many of the reviews applaud Zendaya’s performance. The role she plays as Rue Bennett is very different from the other projects audiences have seen her in, establishing her as an actress to watch.
To grab audience’s attention, HBO Max released a season 2 trailer for Euphoria. It highlights Zendaya’s character, who is currently struggling to believe she can be who she wants to be. The trailer shows her romantic interests in one character in the series, but falling into old habits with another, because she doesn’t believe she can move past her old ways. If you’re not afraid of spoilers for Euphoria’s first season, or a quick glimpse behind the curtain for season 2, watch the official trailer below.
While the trailer shows moments where Zendaya’s character is happy, mostly she’s shown struggling. The trailer also works to highlight the larger ensemble cast at play, all of them with their own heightened experiences. This season seems to really be stressing the idea of Rue Bennett trying to find hope, and just how hard that can be when recovering from addiction and trauma.
Zendaya’s recent success on the big screen, and the upcoming season two, are no doubt combining to bring viewers back to the first season of Euphoria. After many delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans are finally seeing the actress as MJ once again in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While most expected that the Marvel movie would see big success at the box office, the movie has shocked people by becoming the first pandemic-era film to break a billion dollars at the box office. It accomplished this task after only 12 days in theaters.
Another major blockbuster that saw several pandemic-related delays in 2021 was Dune. Zendaya played Chani in the film opposite Timothee Chalamet’s Paul. While her role gave her less screen time, she was an important character who is expected to play a much bigger role in Dune Part 2. In fact, the director has said that in the second film, he consider Chani to be the lead, not Paul.
As her success has grown, fans have been hungry for more information on what’s next for Zendaya’s career. Many have speculated that she could be a natural fit to play Vernita Green’s daughter in Kill Bill 3. The actress was asked about it and actually answered, but only said that while she was flattered by the idea, no one official had ever asked her about it. That isn’t too surprising, since director Quentin Tarantino has never confirmed that project will ever actually happen. However, fans can still hope.
For now, Zendaya can be seen on HBO Max in Euphoria season 2 when it premieres on January 9, 2022. The episodes will release weekly on the streaming service. She’s also set to return for Dune Part 2 as Chani, which has a release date of October 20, 2023.
