On a memorable career night for Euphoria star Zendaya, the 26-year-old matched her accolades with an unforgettable black dress at Monday’s 74th Emmy Awards. The black Valentino satin dress was designed just for her Emmys appearance by Pierpaolo Piccioli, and was inspired by a vintage Valentino dress from the 1987-88 Fall/Winter collection. Zendaya is the official face of Valentino, and her stylist Law Roach ensures she is always wearing the brand’s classic looks on the red carpet.
After turning heads on the red carpet, the Oakland, California native went into the Emmy ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and made Emmy history. Zendaya became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series twice, and her Euphoria win for Best Actress Monday night made her the youngest two-time Emmy winner in history. Euphoria ended the night with six Emmys from 16 total nominations for the series, which just completed its second season.
Her acceptance speech for her Best Actress win was also a highlight, as an enthusiastic Zendaya, fighting back tears, expressed her gratitude to her family and friends, fellow nominees, and the Euphoria cast and crew, as well as creator and showrunner Sam Levinson for “believing in me.” She also thanked those who served as inspiration for her character for the HBO series, a recovering addict who is often the sanest person among her high school classmates. “Anyone who has loved a Rue or feels like they are a Rue, I want you to know that I am so grateful for your stories, and I carry them with me, and I carry them with her,” she said.
It was a big night at the Emmys for Euphoria, and not just for Zendaya. Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, and the series won four additional technical awards. The show did lose the Best Drama Series award to Succession, and both Sydney Sweeney (Outstanding Supporting Actress) and Martha Kelly (Outstanding Guest Actress) lost in their respective categories.
Fans of Zendaya will also note that the actress made a long-awaited personal revelation after the ceremony. In an interview with E!, she said that the first person she texted after she won the Emmy was her “boyfriend,” the first time she has acknowledged her Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland as her official significant other. The pair have made three Marvel films together, starting with Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, but reportedly didn’t start dating until July of 2021.
In addition to being an acclaimed singer and actress, Zendaya is adding fashion icon to her resume. Her red carpet fashion choices often land her on “Best Dressed” lists, and as a new spokesperson for Valentino, she is adding the brand’s classic look to her closet. She wore a red Valentino dress to the Emmys afterparty, and she will headline the Valentino Pink PP Collection advertising campaign, which kicks off this week.
Among the upcoming projects for Zendaya are the sequel to the Oscar-winning sci-fi epic Dune (in which she plays Chani) and Challengers, a drama about two life-long friends who compete against each other in a tennis tournament. That film is expected to open in August of 2023.
