Zack Snyder has moved on from Warner Bros and Netflix has become the home for his first non-DC movie in a while. The streamer was so happy with Army of the Dead that several projects set in this universe are currently in development. However, the filmmaker’s next project is a return to sci-fi with Rebel Moon – inspired by Star Wars. In fact, the script was originally for a Star Wars movie, but after Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney, the director reworked his script to become the Netflix film fan’s can’t wait to see. After being announced last year, fans have finally got their first look at the concept art from the movie.

In a post with additional images, Zack Snyder also announced that Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Bae Doona, and Ray Fisher have boarded a ship to Rebel Moon. Other actors who have signed on for the project are Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang. The feature is slated to begin shooting in April. Check out the director’s tweet below for three pieces of early concept art.
Rebel Moon will be directed by Zack Snyder from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. Described as a grand fantasy adventure, the story follows an enigmatic young woman who is tasked with finding warriors who can fend off an impending invasion by the despotic Regent Balisarius. Honoring the responsibility bestowed upon her by the peaceful colony on the outskirts of the galaxy, she embarks on the perilous quest.
Sofia Boutella will be leading the ensemble cast on this epic adventure. Rebel Moon will also reteam Ray Fisher with Zack Snyder. The pair previously worked on 2017’s Justice League and Snyder’s 2021 director’s cut for HBO Max, playing DC hero Cyborg. He was recently seen in the ABC civil rights drama Women of the Movement and is excited to be part of the new project.
According to Variety, Zack Snyder first developed the project last year as a pitch for the Star Wars universe. His idea pre-dated Disney’s 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm. When they passed on his idea, he reworked it into an original property. Now, with Netflix on board, the aim is to create a Rebel Moon franchise in the same way the director has already expanded Army of the Dead with a prequel film and anime series.
Zack Snyder and his wife Deborah are producing Rebel Moon with Wesley Coller through their company The Stone Quarry. Eric Newman will serve as producer through his Grand Electric banner. Sarah Bowen, also with Grand Electric, will executive produce. Production on the sci-fi epic is set to begin this year. Netflix has not announced a release date for the movie at this time.
Besides Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder has a few other projects in the works too. He will produce Twilight of the Gods – an anime-style web series inspired by Norse mythology for Netflix. The filmmaker is also developing a King Arthur film, which he described as a faithful retelling. The story will be set during the American Gold rush era. Then Snyder will return to direct Planet of the Dead, a sequel to Army of the Dead. He also signed a first-look deal with Netflix.
