Shazam! Fury of the Gods isn’t due to hit theaters until July 2023, but director David F. Sandberg has already revealed the superhero suits that star Zachary Levi and the rest of his Shazam! family will be sporting in the superhero sequel. On Monday morning, Sandberg tweeted out a picture of Levi and his co-stars sporting their new costumes. As he put it, it was done because he didn’t know “how long we can keep the new suits from leaking.”
Sandberg’s tweet comes just weeks after he’d posted a teaser trailer of Zachary Levi’s look in the upcoming sequel. The 17-second clip highlighted specific aspects of his new suit, which appears to take a much stronger influence from the character’s comic book counterpart. After the moody, atmospheric clip showed off his new duds, the teaser stayed true to the character’s lighthearted nature, with him asking “why is it so dark,” poking just a little bit of fun at some of the comic book film genre’s more brooding entries.
Once the new trailer was free to get fans hyped, Sandberg went ahead and beat any potential leaks of these new outfits to the punch, instead opting to give everyone a full, high-res look at Zachary Levi and the rest of the Shazam! sextet. Considering that leaks for these kinds of big-budget superhero flick tend to be rampant (looking at you, Tom Holland), the director is doing what he can to control the hype machine’s narrative and tide fans over between now and when the sequel hits theaters in two years.
Along with Zachary Levi, who’s reprising his role of Billy Batson’s super-powered alter-ego, the photo also showed off Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, D.J. Cotrana as Pedro Pena, Megan Good as Darla Dudley, and Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield. While the six costumes all show some upgrades from their debut in the final battle of 2019’s Shazam!, including darker colors and more pronounced symbols on their chests, Fulton will also be playing the adult and child versions of Mary. She’s replacing Michelle Borth, who played the grown-up version of Mary in the first film.
This preview of the costumes also comes after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared a shadowy look at Black Adam on Instagram back in May. A longtime nemesis of Shazam!, there are no concrete plans for him to face off against Zachary Levi’s character on the big screen just yet. However, Black Adam is getting his own standalone film, which is currently in production. Unlike Sandberg’s tweet, Johnson’s reveal didn’t show off many details of his look, opting for a much more ominous cloaked figure. This, of course, reinforces what the star has been saying about the character, cautioning fans that Black Adam won’t be your standard superhero fare when it hits theaters in July of 2022.
Following the events of the first film, Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will once again focus on Zachary Levi’s titular hero, as well as his foster siblings who were also endowed with powers to round out their superhero family. Despite getting a full look at the costumes, there are few details regarding the movie’s plot. However, both Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu have signed on to play supervillains Hespera and Kalypso, respectively, so it’s likely the Shazam! family will have its work cut out for them when the film hits theaters in 2023.
