Netflix’s Geeked Week has been full of awesome surprises and reveals, including the recently released teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho. The trailer is packed with action and dives a little bit into protagonist Yusuke Urameshi’s origin story.

Yu Yu Hakusho is coming as a live-action adapation series on Netflix.

The source manga and subsequent anime are iconic, so expectations are certainly high for this live-action adaptation to deliver. Check out the first, pretty amazing looking, trailer for Yu Yu Hakusho.

Originally released as a manga in 1990, Yu Yu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, a selfish teenager who saves a child’s life in an uncharacteristic act of self-sacrifice.

Despite dying as a result of this heroic act, Yusuke’s tale goes on as he is revived and returned to the human world as a Spirit Detective. In his new role as Spirit Detective, Yusuke must solve paranormal mysteries on Earth.

The teaser trailer for the live-action Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation is certainly promising. In the trailer, we see Yusuke observing his own lifeless body as paramedics attempt to revive him, along with our first good look at the Toguro brothers.

The Toguro brothers’ appearance shows that the live-action adaptation is seemingly going to be pretty faithful, as the elder Toguro brother is seen perched on his younger brother’s shoulders.

The cast of Yu Yu Hakusho includes Takumi Kitamaru (Tokoy Revengers) as Yusuke Urameshi, Jun Shison as the fox demon Kurama, Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kurabawa, and Kanata Hongo as Hiei.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, there’s a chance that this live-action adaptation may just end up making fans of the manga and anime happy.

The anime is widely considered one of the best battle shonens out there, though, so it’s safe to say that there is a pretty high bar for the series to reach.

Netflix has already received fan and critical acclaim for its One Piece adaptation

However, Netflix has proven itself recently to be capable of putting out good live-action anime adaptations, as the recent One Piece adaptation has taken the world by storm.

One Piece is easily one of the biggest manga and anime series as far as popularity goes, so the fact the streamer pulled it off has people pretty excited for the Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation.

With that being said, Netflix also released things like the terrible Cowboy Bebop adaptation and the live-action Death Note film, so it’s probably good to temper expectations for now.

Hopefully, Netflix has learned its lesson from its previous attempts to adapt beloved anime series, and everything after One Piece, including Yu Yu Hakusho, will be well-made, faithful adaptations that make both new and old fans happy.

Of course, it’s wishful thinking to think that they’ll all be like that, but one can always hope. Netflix has plenty more upcoming live-action adaptations in the barrel, so it’ll need to keep the positive hype train rolling.

In the meantime, you can check out the genuinely good One Piece live-action adaptation on Netflix now. As for the Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation, you won’t have long to wait. The series is set to hit Netflix on Dec. 14, 2023, so make sure to mark your calendars.
