Young Sheldon Actually Getting A Spinoff?

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

Science tells us that the universe continues to expand from the day it was first formed; in that way, it’s fair to say that we will be experiencing the Big Bang for the rest of our lives. That only seems fitting considering that if CBS has its way, we may never stop experiencing its hit sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, in one form or another.

After the surprising success of the prequel spinoff Young Sheldon, CBS is now close to a deal to create a spinoff of Young Sheldon that will focus on the lives of Georgie Cooper and his fiancée Mandy McAllister.

Georgie Cooper And Mandy McAllister

If you’ve never watched Young Sheldon and you’re wondering who the heck these characters are, Georgie Cooper is the older brother to Sheldon Cooper.

In a bit of frankly creepy plotting, Georgie meets his future fiancée Mandy McAllister when he is 17 and she is 29. He lied about his age so they could hook up, and she didn’t realize how thoroughly she had robbed the cradle until the two of them were expecting a child.

Picking Up The Story

That more or less brings you current on these characters’ lives in Young Sheldon; they got engaged at the end of the sixth season, and the next season (which premieres on CBS next month) will be the last for this successful spinoff.

That means there is story potential for this unconventional couple that might necessitate a spinoff, though hardcore fans of The Big Bang Theory know that the relationship at the center of this newest spinoff isn’t destined to last.

Jerry O’Connell As Georgie

In the 12th and final season of The Big Bang Theory, we meet an adult Georgie Cooper played by Stand By Me legend and fan-fave Star Trek voice actor Jerry O’Connell.

That character claims he has been married and divorced twice, and since Mandy McAllister is wife number one, their relationship may not be destined to last very long.

Then again, the Young Sheldon producers have previously indicated they aren’t afraid to play fast and loose with previously established canon, so it’s entirely possible the Georgie and Mandy we met in Young Sheldon will get their own happily ever after.

Still Finalizing

Right now, the actors for Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister (Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, respectively) are still finalizing a deal to star in an initial spinoff season comprised of 13 episodes that would air during the 2024-2025 season.

If all goes according to plan, Young Sheldon fans won’t have to wait very long before the end of that show and the beginning of its spinoff.

Other casting details are unclear, so we’re not sure how many Young Sheldon characters will return or make cameos, but there will definitely be some familiar faces behind the cameras for this ambitious spinoff.

Same Team Young Sheldon

This Young Sheldon spinoff will be written and executive-produced by Steve Holland, Steven Molaro, and Chuck Lorre. Each one of them has experience working on either Young Sheldon or The Big Bang Theory, which Lorre co-created.

That means that fans of the franchise’s quirky humor beats can look forward to more of the same; conversely, fans who have always hated the antics of the young Sheldon Cooper will probably not find much to love in a series dedicated to his brother’s bizarre love life.

So Much Young Sheldon

From the outside looking in, a Young Sheldon spinoff focusing on Sheldon’s brother sounds like a crazy idea, but once upon a time, a spinoff of The Big Bang Theory sounded equally insane.

It turns out that it was Chuck Lorre who was crazy like a fox, and Young Sheldon ended up being another massive hit for CBS.

Considering how successful Young Sheldon has been on Netflix recently, Lorre’s upcoming (and completely different) Big Bang spinoff for Max is likely to become a smash hit as well.

At this point, there’s so much Sheldon Cooper content out there that it is becoming a cinematic universe of its own. We’re just going to call it the SCEU from now on; we think Sheldon would approve, and compared to DCEU flops like The Flash and Aquaman 2, the many shows forming the SCEU look downright brilliant.
