You can thank creator and director Taylor Sheridan for a lot of things. On top of making cowboy hats and Carhart Vests cool again, he brought one of the most beloved series to hit the screens in the last few years. Yellowstone introduced the Duttons and their daily struggles on their ranch in Montana. The series stars Kevin Costner, Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and others and returns for its fifth season in November. On top of the success Sheridan saw with Yellowstone, he released a prequel, 1883, and is releasing another, 1923. The two of them are meant to chronicle earlier members of the Dutton family and how they navigated different aspects of the timeframe their titles depict. The latter project is still in development and has just landed another stellar talent to the ranks.
According to Deadline, the Yellowstone prequel, 1923, has added Sebastian Roche to the cast. He is joining a cast that already includes Hollywood heavyweights Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The series will be the second to address an earlier version of the Dutton family, this time facing such obstacles as a pandemic, prohibition, drought, and The Great Depression. While the details of Roche’s role are still unknown, he seems to be an excellent fit for an opposing force to Harrison Ford’s Dutton. The two of them and Mirren are the only three cast members announced on the series IMDb page.
Sebastian Roche has been working in Hollywood since the mid-1980s, and you can bet you’ve run into him on at least one of your favorite television series in the past four decades. He appeared in Sex in the City, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Minds, 24, NCIS: Los Angeles, General Hospital, The Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural. His most recent appearances have been in CW’s Batwoman, The Man in the High Castle, and The Originals, where he reprised his earlier role in The Vampire Diaries. While his name may not shine quite as bright as his co-stars in the Yellowstone prequel, he has years of experience in TV, where Ford and Mirren don’t work as often. Don’t be surprised if he is the unexpected high point of 1923.
The release and success of 1883 showed that the Dutton family could be successful without the heavy-hitting Kevin Costner (even if it employed its own heavy-hitting Sam Elliot, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill). They showed the possibility of a franchise that could continue to grow for years to come. With his second Yellowstone prequel set to release in December, he is setting himself up as the next Dick Wolfe (who masterminded Law & Order and all of its spin-offs for the last 30 years). Time will tell if Yellowstone has that kind of staying power.
Still, with names like Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Sam Elliot, and now Sebastian Roche, it is clear that Hollywood’s star power certainly believes his creation’s viability. Once the Duttons face off against The Great Depression, what is next, WWII? Civil War?
