When Showtime’s psychological drama Yellowjackets first burst onto the scene in November 2021, fans and critics were captivated. The intensely dramatic plotlines woven together alongside stellar acting performances were more than enough to make the series an overnight sensation. But, when the show’s premiere season came to an end in early 2022, fans were left wondering when exactly they could expect a Yellowjackets Season 2.

With summer quickly turning to fall and the first anniversary of the show’s debut episode soon approaching, there’s been no signs that Yellowjackets Season 2 will come with the changing of the seasons. That’s because it won’t. According to the show’s co-creators and showrunners, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, in a conversation the duo had with The Wrap, the sophomore season hasn’t even begun filming yet. For that, they’re eyeing a start date sometime over the next few weeks, putting them on a course to hopefully drop the next installment in early 2023, ideally during the year’s first quarter. According to Lyle, although production will amp up in August, the reality of wrapping before February is an unlikely one.

Explaining the slowdown in getting Yellowjackets Season 2 out of their brains, onto the pages of a script, and then in front of a camera, Lyle says that the production team didn’t want to “rush” the process and to instead be sure that they nailed down their storylines. Because the plot jumps between two time frames, it’s a much more delicate process than your average single timeline series. Meanwhile, Lyle says that for the first season, they already had a pilot ready, meaning that there’s one more episode they’ll need to write, plan, and shoot for Season 2.

A critically celebrated series, Yellowjackets follows the story of a high-school girls soccer team involved in a plane crash. The survivors find themselves lost somewhere in the middle of the Ontario wilderness and soon, chaos and panic cause them to spiral out of control. As their brains revert to survival mode, they quickly shift their perspectives to do anything to make it out alive – including cannibalism. On the other side of the timeline, we see the older version of the girls, now adults, attempting to cope and talk about their traumatizing time in the wilderness. With several cliffhangers at the end of the first season, Yellowjackets Season 2 has been theorized and talked about since the last episode aired.

Along with an incredibly intricate storyline, Yellowjackets boasts a lineup of A-list talent including Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Sammi Hanratty. Of the awards earned by the production, Lynskey and Ricci also nabbed Primetime Emmy nominations for their work in the series. Each of the original cast members are expected to return for Yellowjackets Season 2.

While we may be waiting a bit longer than hoped for news surrounding an arrival date of Yellowjackets Season 2, there’s at least some news coming out surrounding the series. Today, it was revealed that Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) would be joining the cast as the adult version of Liv Hewson’s Van. With this newest bit of information, we can pick back up with speculations surrounding what the show’s sophomore season may bring.
