Showtime’s hit series about the teenage survivors of a plane crash was met with instant critical and fan acclaim when it debuted last year. The show’s official Twitter account provides the first look at season 2 of Yellowjackets, with the tweets caption an ominous tease that the girls will finally descend into cannibalism. Fans know that some of the girls survive and live on in 2021, but not all of them make it, and the first to go during last year’s season finale may actually be making a return in season 2.

Jackie was the first of the girls to die, freezing to death in the wilderness during the closing moments of the season finale. Yellowjackets blatantly hinted that the girls eventually resort to cannibalism, though nothing took place during season 1. In the modern day plot, a cult using the same strange symbol found in the 1996 cabin is taking root, though how it came to be, and why, is currently shrouded in mystery. The girls eating Jackie’s body, after thawing it out, could be the pivotal step that brings the survivors closer to madness.

Yellowjackets cast, split between teenage and adult versions of its characters, includes the newly cast Lauren Ambrose as the adult version of Liv Henson’s Vanessa Plamer, Christina Ricci and Sammi Hanratty as Misty Quigly, Melanie Lynsky and Sophie Nelisse as Shauna Shipman, and Juliette Lewis and Sophie Thatcher as Natalie Scatorccio. Some of the teenage survivors with no adult counterparts, such as Ella Purnell’s Jackie, may not survive the experience, while others may enter the modern day story at a later date. In the case of Jackie, even if she is now dead, her time on the show has not come to an end.

Beyond a likely appearance as the Yellowjacket’s first human meal, Jackie has already appeared in the modern story with the adult Shauna seeing visions of her former best friend. Yellowjackets teen characters, as more inevitably pass away, could also appear as visions, perhaps with some sort of connection to the strange cult that comes out of the wilderness. Present day Shauna sees Jackie as a manifestation of her guilt, could other survivors end up seeing different visions as they cope with the traumatic experience?

One of the Yellowjackets, Lottie, played by Simone Kessel (adult) and Courtney Eaton (teen), has schizophrenia, and as the first season progressed, became more and more prominent to both the 1996 and 2021 storylines. Having already convinced one survivor she has supernatural powers, could part of season 2 see a rise of Lottie in the past, as her present machinations start to come to light? Yellowjackets has plenty of fan theories floating around the internet, and right now, anyone could be right.

Yellowjackets is Showtime’s second most streamed show in history, only behind Dexter: The New Blood. Embracing the traditional weekly release of new episodes, Showtimes gamble that word of mouth and social media buzz would support the show paid off. Yellowjackets season 2 returns on March 24, 2023.
