Wyatt Russell Remaking The ’80s Most Underrated Sci-Fi Action Adventure?
Wyatt Russell, the son of the legendary Kurt Russell, just recently starred alongside his father in the new show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. He recently disclosed that he’d be more than happy to remake one of the ’80s most underrated sci-fi action-adventure films Hollywood has ever produced, The Last Starfighter. According to Gizmodo, both Wyatt and his father would be interested in the remake.
Kurt And Wyatt Russel Want To Remake The Last Starfighter
Both Kurt and Wyatt Russell recently spoke about their experience on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the duo entertained the idea of a property they’d like to remake. Interestingly enough, both Russells have expressed their desire to remake the 1984’s classic sci-fi action-adventure film The Last Starfighter, which was only seemingly forgotten by Hollywood. The truth is that many have tried to revive the IP through series or film, but to no success, leaving The Last Starfighter stuck in 1984.
The Last Starfighter Is An Underrated Sci-Fi Gem
Perhaps Wyatt Russell will have more luck than those before him now that we’ve got to see both him and his father geek out over the iconic IP. The Last Starfighter is an American space opera with technological significance because it has the distinction of being one of cinema’s earliest movies to use extensive “real-life” CGI to depict its many starships, environments, and battle scenes—it was only rivaled by Disney’s Tron in that regard.
Alex Rogan In The Last Starfighter
The movie is centered on a teenager living in a trailer park whose only entertainment is an arcade game called Starfighter, in which the player defends “the Frontier” against Xur and Ko-Dan Armada in a space battle. After the protagonist becomes the highest-scoring player in the world, he’s actually abducted by aliens to fight in an actual battle that was mimicked by the game.
Admittedly, this kind of scenario is every sci-fi fan’s dream, and the movie makes very good use of this trope to deliver a reasonably good narrative, so it’s not entirely strange that Wyatt Russell shows interest.
Kurt Russell As A Sci-Fi Star
It’s also unsurprising that Kurt Russell expressed interest in The Last Starfighter, given his appearances in various sci-fi releases, such as The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him Now You Don’t, The Strongest Man in the World, The Thing, Soldier, and many other releases, like the 1994’s Stargate movie, which inspired the same-name series.
Sadly, he wasn’t a part of the Stargate SG-1, and the powers that be in Hollywood can now attach the iconic actor to one of the most iconic titles and have him and Wyatt Russell star and even produce The Last Starfighter remake.
The Last Starfighter Is Ripe For Reboot
Despite it being largely forgotten by modern audiences, The Last Starfighter was very well received by audiences and critics, and this success warranted a massive number of various adaptations, including a musical, several novelizations, comics, games, and even video games.
Considering that we’re living in an era of remakes, the modern computer graphics and advanced visual effects, paired with some of the biggest names in sci-fi, such as Kurt and Wyatt Russell, the remake of The Last Starfighter could very well surpass the original film.
