The Worst Movie Of 2024 Isn’t Streaming And Should Stay That Way
As the film industry continues to recover from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023, many blockbusters have shifted schedules this year, making 2024 a little slow for major motion pictures. Still, this hasn’t stopped some films like Longlegs or Deadpool & Wolverine from wowing audiences far and wide, with excellent writing, top-notch directing, and some truly memorable performances. On the other side of the filmmaking spectrum, however, we have films like Not Another Church Movie, which offers one of the worst viewing experiences in recent memory.
A Parody Of A Parody
Not Another Church Movie is currently unavailable to stream through any major platform, despite only having been released a few months ago. The film, which was written and directed by Johnny Mack, serves as a hackneyed take on the parody movie genre, and takes aim at the works of Tyler Perry, while offering almost no chuckle-worthy jokes whatsoever.
The film serves as the directorial debut for Mack, though he currently holds writing credits on projects such as Kevin Hart’s Real Husbands of Hollywood, Jamie Foxx’s Dad Stop Embarrassing Me, and a wide array of BET and MTV Awards show programming.
This Is Not A Tyler Perry Movie
I’m not exactly sure how Johnny Mack managed to get Not Another Church Movie off the ground, though from what I can tell, Tyler Perry himself had nothing to do with it. The Mea Culpa magnate has not weighed in on the project with any public comments, despite some interviews from the filmmakers and cast seemingly begging him to get the joke. The problem, of course, is that there’s really no joke to get in the first place.
Taylor Pherry And Madude
The narrative of Not Another Church Movie centers on a hard-working man named Taylor Pherry, who is contacted by God and placed on a divine mission to create a cinematic universe which centers on a fictionalized version of his dysfunctional family. This results in an off-the-walls character called Madude, which is a thinly-veiled critique of Perry’s Madea series. As Pherry ventures to launch the film and uplift his community however, the devil attempts to interfere, which threatens to ruin the message of God.
Misguided In Every Way
Not Another Church Movie is truly terrible in just about every way, from the poorly-realized story, to the paper-thin production value, to the stale performances of stars including Jamie Foxx, Tisha Campbell, Mickey Rourke, and Vivica A. Fox. The film lacks the charm of other parody outings like Scary Movie, Spaceballs, and Not Another Teen Movie, and ends up being wishy-washy as both a critique and a celebration of Tyler Perry’s work.

GFR SCORE
I don’t necessarily want to be too harsh on Not Another Church Movie, since its the directorial debut of the filmmaker, and it was clearly meant to be a fun little outing that nobody was overthinking, but it definitely could have used a few extra drafts and some more care from the production team. Critics and general audiences seem to agree that this messy parody film was a tough watch, as the film has amassed a pathetic 11 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
If for some reason you’re still interested in catching Not Another Church Movie, you can watch it by forking over your hard-earned cash on video on demand outlets including Apple TV+ or Amazon Prime.
