The Worst DC Movie Of All Time Chosen By Letterboxd
Coming in with a 1.4 rating out of 5, Letterboxd (a social platform for film critics like yourself) rated 2004’s Catwoman as the worst DC movie of all time. With 2011’s Green Lantern and 1997’s Steel following up as second and third worst DC films, Catwoman, which the GenreVision podcast recently reviewed, took the first prize in this category.
Halle Berry’s Catwoman Is The Worst DC Film
Directed by Pitof and written by John Rogers, John Brancato, and Michael Ferris, Catwoman was released in theaters on July 23, 2004, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was met with poor turnouts and damaging reviews. Starring Halle Berry as Catwoman, Benjamin Bratt, Lambert Wilson, Frances Conroy, Alex Borstein, and Sharon Stone also worked on the film in supporting roles. Its box office performance was lackluster, to say the least, ultimately grossing only $82 million worldwide when the movie cost more than $100 million to create.
Patience Phillips Gains Cat-Like Powers
Catwoman tells the tale of Patience Phillips (a meek and mild-mannered designer). Patience stumbles upon a conspiracy within the cosmetics company she works for involving a certain product the company produces that has the potential to cause health problems for millions of consumers.
After Patience is caught sticking her nose in the conspirators’ business, she is murdered. Once she dies, an Egyptian Mau cat revives her, granting her a range of superhuman, cat-like abilities. With her newfound powers, Patience Phillips (Halle Berry) takes control of her rebirthed life and becomes the crime-fighting kitty character, Catwoman.
Why Catwoman Bombed
Unfortunately, the movie was terrible. The execution of the special effects was subpar. The editing was so bad in some places that you may get motion sickness trying to keep up with what’s happening … i.e. the basketball scene … and the intro to the movie is complete folly with its badly photoshopped kitty traveling through time in the various images shown. Catwoman did however receive some awards. Seven Golden Raspberry Award nominations were logged for the movie, and Catwoman won the award in the categories of Worst Picture, Worst Actress, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay.
Unfaithful To Catwoman’s Origin
Officially, critics shredded the 2004 DC failure, noting that the performances, direction, CGI, editing, costumes, plot, and dialogue were all messy. One of the worst elements of Catwoman is that the movie was entirely unfaithful to the original story of the character. The plot of the movie was so scattered and nonsensical that the movie is somewhat of a laugh fest but the humor wasn’t intentional. It’s so bad it’s funny, but not in a good way. The best thing about Catwoman was how the movie had a positive effect on Halle Berry’s career.
Stream The Movie On Max
If you somehow missed out on seeing the 2004 DC film, Catwoman, the opportunity to treat yourself to a ridiculous visual experience has not passed you by. Thanks to the age of streaming channels, there aren’t very many “unfindable” movies anymore. Currently, the movie is available for streaming on MAX for those who have a subscription to the channel. Catwoman is rated PG-13 (maybe for the awkward sexual situations that arise), and it has a runtime of 104 minutes.
