Star Trek: Picard fans were treated to a fantastic throwback of past storylines when the character of Data was preserved through technology and came back in a different form for the show. But with that storyline essentially wrapped up there’s speculation that another character from previous generations could make his way back to the screen. Recent rumors and speculation have Worf returning to Picard’s world for the next season of the show.

Worf returning to Star Trek: Picard would fit with some thematic pieces of the show which have tried to tie past storylines to the new series. Worf wasn’t featured on the first season, but bringing him back into the fold would fit both the approach of Picard and also what actor Michael Dorn has said about coming back on to the screen.

Michael Dorn has said he’d be interested in a role on Star Trek: Picard, reprising his role as the Klingon, but doesn’t want it to be just a one-off or a cameo. It’s hard to blame him for asking to have a major role in the show, considering how many other characters have been brought back for Picard, including Whoopi Goldberg‘s planned return for Season 2. With the considerable makeup hurdles one needs to clear to look like a Klingon, Dorn asking to play a big part in the new show is completely reasonable.

Worf

Worf coming back for Star Trek: Picard would play perfectly on the new show. He was a major player on both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine and appeared in a number of Star Trek movies. Michael Dorn’s request for a large role could be nothing more than a thinly-veiled negotiating strategy because Picard is already bringing back so many characters from The Next Generation in some shape or form already.

Since the Klingons didn’t appear at all in the first season of Star Trek: Picard, the show could be setting up a major reveal in the second season. Star Trek without the protruding Klingon foreheads just doesn’t feel quite right and was rather conspicuous considering how central they’ve been to other stories, Picard’s in particular.

Star Trek: Picard was a hit with critics, scoring 86% on the Tomatometer for its first season on CBS All Access. But the ratings were a completely different story. It started off like gangbusters, crushing expectations with viewership on the platform. But apparently, that was short-lived, with rumors that the ratings had been cut by more than half by the time the finale dropped.

Picard

That being said, Trekkies are nothing if not a loyal bunch, and bringing back a major character like Worf for Star Trek: Picard could be just the shot in the arm the show needs. And it looks possible considering the rumor mill and general trajectory of the program. For now, we’ll have to wait on definitive confirmation. Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard is currently in pre-production as they finalize casting and storylines. Tentatively, a late 2021 timeline looks the most likely, but it could push into 2022. We are going to get more Picard for sure, but Worf news will need to wait for now.
