It has been a bit since we saw Woody Harrelson graced our television screens. The man was last seen on a television show during his time on The Freak Brothers. Well, now the man is officially back. Although he has returned for a film that is part of Netflix, it still counts as the small screen. There is nothing small about this film though, as it currently holds the #1 spot on the streaming platform. Harrelson and Kevin Hart have teamed up for a buddy-cop type of comedy film that is garnering tons of attention. That film is The Man From Toronto.
The Man From Toronto has the #1 spot on Netflix, but the Rotten Tomatoes score for the film is terrible right now. Then again, it just barely debuted, so we have to give it some time for those numbers to climb a bit. Currently, it has a 26% critic rating and a 45% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That is atrocious by any standard, but there are less than 50 reviews on the critic side, and less than 200 on the audience side. It takes some time to aggregate some totals that are fairer in describing how people feel about this film. Also, it is still #1 on Netflix, so that must count for something. No one is going to sit through an entire movie just to then write something awful about it at the end. Well, we suppose that is how most critics are employed. It likely doesn’t matter, as Woody Harrelson and Kevin Hart are two of the funniest men on the planet.
The Man From Toronto stars Woody Harrelson as his namesake. He is a world-renowned assassin, who gets mixed up with Teddy Jackson (Kevin Hart). Teddy stumbles on a situation involving interrogation and is mistaken for the assassin, The Man from Toronto. Jackson is forced to play along when the FBI intervenes in the situation. Now Teddy must take on the role of an assassin, as he has been squarely placed in a plot to kill the Venezuelan Prime Minister. Now Jackson must take on the role of world-class assassin, but that is when he meets the real Man from Toronto (Harrelson), whose real name is Randy. Randy convinces Teddy that they must remain teamed up because they know Teddy as the Man from Toronto and not Randy. Without spoiling the rest of the film, fans can go see what this #1 film is all about. Anyone who happens to be a fan of the buddy-coo films that Kevin Hart has been a part of will be a fan of this one. Especially because he is joined by the perennial funny man, Woody Harrelson.
Interestingly, Woody Harrelson was not the first choice to take on the role of The Man from Toronto. The film was initially supposed to star Kevin Hart and Jason Statham. However, Statham left the film six weeks before it was to begin shooting because of issues he had with the producers. Statham did not like the tone or rating of the film and exited. That left Harrelson to step in. The film also ran into heavy production delays due to COVID-19 restrictions. The film was supposed to be released in theaters by Sony Pictures, but after massive delays, Sony decided to move it to stream instead. The film’s distribution rights were then sold to Netflix.
The Man From Toronto stars Woody Harrelson, Kevin Hart, Kaley Cuoco, Jasmine Mathews, Lela Loren, Pierson Fodé, Jencarlos Canela, and Ellen Barkin. Even though the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are bad, that does not mean the film is bad. These are just the early reviews, and those numbers are likely to go up in the coming days. It is certainly worth a watch for those who enjoy Harrelson and Hart. They do make a hilarious combo.
The Man From Toronto is streaming on Netflix and is currently sitting in the #1 spot. Anyone who has seen Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee in the Zombieland films will love him in this film. The same can be said for those who have seen Kevin Hart in films like Ride Along and Central Intelligence. Check the movie out and determine if it’s much more entertaining than what Rotten Tomatoes has to say.
