In 2018, the mid-credits scene featuring Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady stopped audiences in their tracks. We got to see Harrelson in jail as the serial killer. While he makes clear that he is the character known as Carnage, and that he’ll be showing up for Venom 2, we still haven’t gotten a look at Woody Harrelson in the Carnage costume. In the comics, the symbiote-driven villain wears a red and black guise. What will the character look like for the movie? As commonly happens, we now have our first glimpse from a merchandise reveal. It seems that Funko has created a POP! Character for Carnage. A photo was revealed on Instagram. Check it out below.
Of course, it’s possible the Funko toy could be based on Carnage from the comics and not Woody Harrelson’s upcoming portrayal. However, Venom 2 is set to come out this summer. It was scheduled to release in October 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic. With that timeline, it makes sense that toys would have been sitting in waiting for a while and are now soon to be released.
Previously, photos from the set have leaked. These show Woody Harrelson, but not in costume. We’ve also seen possible leaked photos with CGI, but they were never confirmed. Star Tom Hardy posted a photo on his Instagram at one point. It seems like he may not have had permission to do so. The photo was taken down shortly after, but not before fans got a look at Woody Harrelson with a red Hawaiian shirt, seemingly in character as Cletus Kasady/Carnage.
This hasn’t been enough for many fans, including the talented Instagram fanartist known as spdrmnkyxxiii. The artist often creates look at upcoming expectations for audiences or creates their own take on what they wished would have happened. For Venom 2, they created their own rendition of Woody Harrelson as Carnage. The art shows the character in mid transformation. It also gives a look at the symbiotes, the red and black coloring, and Harrelson looking thoughtful.
Clearly, the mid-credits scene left fans hungry for more from Woody Harrelson. If you haven’t seen the best look at Harrelson as Kasady, you’ll want to watch this two-minute scene where Tom Hardy’s character goes to interview him in prison.
Besides this scene from the credits, Woody Harrelson wasn’t in the first Venom film. Perhaps that’s part of what critics were missing. While the first movie did fairly well with audiences, and rocked the box office, critics hated it. The Rotten Tomatoes shows a critic’s rating of 29%, while audiences have it at 81%. That’s a big gap on this one. Meanwhile, the movie earned $856 million worldwide. While sequels frequently make less than their originals, there was no way they weren’t going to make another movie after earnings like that.
The upcoming sequel is officially titled Venom: Let There be Carnage, so there’s no mistaking that Woody Harrelson’s character will play a major role. We’ll finally get to see him go against Tom Hardy in the long-awaited sequel on June 25, 2021.
