Ever since the DCEU died with more of a whimper than a bang, fans have been conducting endless postmortems to figure out where things went wrong. As with any dead friend, however, I’m less interested in figuring out why this cinematic universe died than I am in celebrating its life and achievements. In the spirit of that, you should know that Wonder Woman–the best DCEU movie ever made–is now streaming for free on Tubi (no subscription plan or membership among secret Amazons required).

Of course, if you’ve been living in a cave (on Themisycra or not), you may need a primer on what Wonder Woman is all about. It’s basically an origin story about the title character (introduced in the brainless brawler Batman v. Superman), showing how her life among an isolated tribe of Amazonian warriors is disrupted when she rescues a charismatic American pilot. Soon, Wonder Woman is reluctantly dragged into World War I, but she eventually realizes there are more forces in this conflict than her new allies could ever imagine.

The Cast

While not an ensemble featuring other colorful heroes, Wonder Woman has a very strong cast, starting with Gal Gadot: she effortlessly infuses this girl power icon with the physical and emotional strength that holds the entire picture together. She is joined by Star Trek (2009) veteran Chris Pine, whose leading man charm made his onscreen romance with a literal goddess believable.

Other great talents (including Robin Wright as Wonder Woman’s Amazonian mentor and Lucy Davis as a secretary who dreams of greater things) round out a wonderfully eclectic cast that gels perfectly around this stylish comic book world.

A Critical And Commercial Success

Gal Gadot

When it was released in 2017, Wonder Woman became one of the DCEU’s most financially successful films. It didn’t reach the heights (or should that be depths?) of Aquaman, but this Amazonian adventure earned $824 million against a budget of $149 million.

In addition to being a box office smash, Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth coaxed some truly kind words out of critics.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Wonder Woman has a critical score of 93 percent. Critics generally praised the film for being both “thrilling” and “earnest” and specifically praised the strength of Gadot’s performance, which is admittedly the strongest performance of the entire film.

The critical and commercial success of this movie made a sequel inevitable, but the less said about Wonder Woman 1984, the better.

The Best Of The DCEU

As for me, I was pleasantly surprised by this first film: it was faithful to many of the core concepts of the original DC comics while fleshing out a character that was otherwise just a wasted cameo in Batman v. Superman.

The action is vibrant and memorable, but better still was the chemistry between the core cast members. Unlike other DCEU movies that largely built flat stories around even flatter characters (looking at you, Black Adam), this movie makes us care about its genuinely compelling characters before throwing them into one killer action scene after another.

GFR SCORE

Will you think Wonder Woman is as strong an adventure as the Amazon warrior at its center, or will you think this film’s appeal is as hard to find as an invisible plane? You won’t know until you lasso over the remote and stream it on Tubi. And if you want to watch it with only your underwear on like Wonder Woman herself, we promise not to judge you.
