Will Smith’s Most Iconic Movie Is Shooting Up The Charts On Netflix
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's Bad Boys II is top ten in the Netflix streaming charts.
After hitting Netflix earlier this month, Bad Boys II starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is climbing the streaming charts. The popular buddy cop action comedy is dominating viewership in several countries including the United States, Australia, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and several other territories across various continents.
Directed by Michael Bay and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Bad Boys II serves as a sequel to the 1995 film Bad Boys. Like its predecessor, the story follows detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence). But this time the duo is tasked with investigating the flow of illegal drugs in Miami eight years later.
Released in July 2003, Bad Boys II received extremely negative reviews from critics. The film currently holds a dreadful approval rating of 23% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s general consensus describing the movie as two and a half hours of explosions and witless banter. However, the Will Smith starrer did well commercially, earning $273 million at the global box office.
Due to the positive reception from fans, a third film, Bad Boys for Life, was released in January 2020. Although Michael Bay considered directing the movie, he was eventually replaced by Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah due to budget constraints. The script was penned by Chris Bremner, Peter Craig, and Joe Carnahan, while Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprised their roles as the iconic cops.
For the third Bad Boys outing, the story follows the Miami detectives as they investigate a string of murders tied to Lowrey’s troubled past. Bad Boys for Life, starring Will Smith, was released by Sony Pictures under the Columbia Pictures label. Unlike Bad Boys II, the film was praised by critics and earned an impressive $426.5 million at the global box office.
The Will Smith starrer also became the fourth highest-grossing film of 2020 and the highest-grossing film in the franchise. A fourth installment is currently in development, with Chris Bremner returning to write the script. Sony Pictures also told Variety that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will serve as directors once more.
Bad Boys stars, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence also confirmed that the movie was officially moving ahead with a video on social media. The clip follows the actor as he drives to the home of his co-star saying, “I’ve got an announcement. Y’all better stop scrolling.” As a hint, he plays the opening bars of “Shake Ya Tailfeather” which was featured on the Bad Boys II soundtrack.
“I wish I was you, not knowing what I’m about to show me,” Will Smith added. Arriving at Lawrence’s door, the pair tells everyone that the fourth film is officially on the way. “It’s about that time!” Lawrence says. “Bad boys for life baby,” Smith chimes in, referencing the duo’s catchphrase.
The currently untitled Bad Boys film will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer along with Will Smith for Westbrook, Doug Belgrad, and Chad Oman. Martin Lawrence, James Lassiter, Mike Stenson, Barry Waldman, and Jon Mone will serve as executive producers, Variety reports.
