If rom-coms and heartfelt dramas aren’t your thing for Valentine’s Day celebrations, Netflix has you covered. Instead, check out the side-splitting Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg-led action-filled buddy-comedy, The Other Guys. Currently crushing the competition on the platform, the film is sitting cozily among the top ten movies streaming on Netflix right now.
First released in 2010, The Other Guys acts as a parody to other cop based films that take themselves too seriously. Will Ferrell plays Gamble, an NYPD detective who, along with Mark Wahlberg’s Hoitz, is tied to his desk. Watching from inside the station, the two share different viewpoints of the work their fellow officers do out on the streets. While Gamble is happy where he is, far away from the threat of violence and action, Hoitz dreams of the day where he can get back out there. Everything changes for the duo when they are called to take on a job that no one else is able to do. What seems insignificant at first, launches the pair into a full-fledged mission where they hope to prove their salt as more than just paperwork detectives. Starring alongside Ferrell and Wahlberg is a star-studded cast including Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Ray Stevenson, with Ice-T as the narrator.
During its premiere weekend in theaters during August 2010, the film brought in $35.5 million, knocking prior fan favorite, Inception, out of the number one spot. Directed by legendary comedic filmmaker, Adam McKay, the feature landed a score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes with the website crediting countless laugh out loud moments as well as the unbeatable comedic timing between stars, Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, in making it such a success. Outside of Rotten Tomatoes, The Other Guys continued to gain positive reception from critics who enjoyed the talent as well as the hilarious antics that gave viewers twists and turns the whole way through. It’s no wonder fans are excited to catch it on Netflix now.
Praise for leading star Will Ferrell is no surprise as the actor and comedian has solidified himself as a living legend within the comedy universe. As many of the world’s greatest comedians do, Ferrell got his start on NBC’s beloved sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Performing there for seven seasons from 1995-2002, the actor garnered both a huge fan and professional base. Ferrell left the series with countless quotable characters and impressions under his belt including Rober Goulet, Steve Butabi, and former President, George W. Bush.
From there, things only went up for Ferrell. Coming off hot on the heels of his time on SNL, Will Ferrell nabbed the part of Buddy the elf in the now holiday classic, Elf. Continuing to be one of the most-watched films during the holiday season, the movie first launched in 2003 and with it another terrific, over-the-top performance by Ferrell was born. Keeping up with his unbelievable talent in character acting, Ferrell would go on to hold comedically genius credits in films such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Semi-Pro. Taking things to a production side, Ferrell teamed up with Adam McKay to launch their own comedy based website, Funny or Die in 2007. The writing duo would also pair up to pen several scripts over the years, including the 2008 blockbuster hit, Step Brothers, in which Ferrell starred opposite John C. Riley with McKay directing.
Along with his long list of on-screen titles, Will Ferrell has also worked on a slew of animated pieces. Fans of the WB turned Adult Swim series, The Oblongs will remember Ferrell’s voice as the bizarre family’s father, Bob Oblong. Though the series petered out after only 1 season, Ferrell went on to lend his voice to countless other productions including Family Guy, Curious George the film, and King of the Hill. Ferrell has also starred in several animated features including The Lego Movie, which saw him reprise his role in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, and Megamind as the titular villain in the DreamWorks Animation 2010 film.
Whether you love Will Ferrel for his laughable Saturday Night Live characters, his short-lived time on The Office, or even one of his more serious films like Everything Must Go, you’re sure to enjoy watching the actor shine alongside Mark Wahlberg in The Other Guys. With Valentine’s Day in full swing and many of us looking for a laugh, the buddy comedy is bound to do the trick. Treat yourself with a cozy set of pajamas and the rib busting laughs of this top performing comedy, now on Netflix.
