Actress Whoopi Goldberg hopes to return to one of her more famous roles. During her interview with Jenifer Lewis on ABC’s The View, Goldberg reminded her that they still have plans to make a Sister Act 3. The film was announced way back in 2020.
Whoopi Goldberg and her Sister Act co-star spoke about the potential sequel to the famous 1992 film. The original film was directed by Emile Ardolino and centered on Goldberg’s Deloris Wilson, who is forced to become a nun after being placed in a witness protection program. Both women laughed while discussing the supposed upcoming sequel.
Whoopi Goldberg seemed confident that the Sister Act 3 would happen and mentioned how she would love to work with Lewis again because “she’s fun.” Lewis responded by saying that she’s “ready” for the film to hit Disney+ soon and revealed that it was Goldberg who taught her how to sing on the movie set. In the original 1992 film, Lewis played one of the back-up singers to Goldberg’s Deloris Wilson.
The first Sister Act received mostly positive reviews from critics. The film currently holds a rating of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus referring to it as a “sweet musical comedy.” Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun praised Whoopi Goldberg’s comedic performance.
Talk of a Sister Act 3 arose in October 2021. It was reported that the sequel would land on Disney+ and that High School Musical: The Series director Tim Federie would direct the project. The Whoopi Goldberg-led comedy has been in development since 2018.
In addition to returning to Sister Act, Whoopi Goldberg recently returned to the Star Trek universe. The actress reprised her role as Guinan in the second season of Star Trek: Picard. Series star Patrick Stewart invited Goldberg to return to the role during an appearance on The View in 2020.
While it appears the legendary comedic actress has been making a comeback, it hasn’t been all positive news for Goldberg. She recently tweeted an apology after making controversial comments regarding the Holocaust. The comments led to a back-and-forth on The View.
Whoopi Goldberg also gave her thoughts on the passing of late Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols. Goldberg called the actress a “trailblazer” and said she was “the first black person [she’d] ever seen who made it to the future. Nichols played the role of Uhura in numerous iterations of Star Trek.
There has yet to be a concrete release date for when fans can see the next installment of the Sister Act franchise. One thing we know for sure is that Whoopi Goldberg is counting down the days till she gets to step in front of cameras for the sequel. The last time Goldberg portrayed her character in the franchise was in the 1993 sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
We have to wait and see whether Whoopi Goldberg’s controversial comments may turn some people off from watching Sister Act 3. As of now, fans of the original film will continue to speculate about when the film will hit Disney+.
