However, while she hasn’t starred in a single role since 2014, Mendes is still very active on social media, where she pitches products to her 5 million followers and takes photos of her daily life. And one look at her Instagram page provides plenty of clues regarding her disappearance from Hollywood.
Namely, Mendes previously stated, on several occasions, that she never actually retired from acting. She merely stated that she was unimpressed with the stereotypical roles she was being offered at the time following the release of Lost River. She also added that if she had to stay away from her family due to work, the movie would have to offer something for her that she can’t turn away from, and the list of things she would do for a film is rather short, as well.
Instead of acting in films, Mendes has become somewhat of a social media fashion icon for stay-at-home moms and homemakers. Apart from the reasons we mentioned above, Mender herself has become a mom. She started dating Ryan Gosling after meeting him on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines. Later, the couple secretly married, and Mendes gave birth to their first of two daughters in 2014—the very same year she stopped acting.
This isn’t uncommon in the entertainment industry, and many actresses take a break from work after having a child. However, many also returned to work soon after, which wasn’t the case with Eva Mendes. Instead of fighting for work in a cutthroat industry, she decided to focus more on her family, and both she and Gosling have kept their family life deliberately private in the decade since they met, with Mendes previously being hesitant to discuss her so-called retirement from acting.
