Over thirty years after Coming to America was released in 1988, the sequel, Coming 2 America is heading to Prime Video on March 5, 2021. While Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones are all returning, Coming 2 America features a ton of new faces, including Wesley Snipes, who is introduced in the latest trailer.
In Coming 2 America, Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem Joffer is about to become King of Zamunda. But Prince Akeem discovers that he has a son he didn’t know about back in America, sending the Prince and his aide Semmi (Arsenio Hall) back to America to find his son, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Prince Akeem must groom his son to become the next king, while also watching out for General Izzi (Wesley Snipes), who wants to take over Zamunda.
Wesley Snipes looks hilarious as General Izzi, who is the brother of Imani (Vanessa Bell Calloway), who was originally Prince Akeem’s intended bride. In the quick glimpse we get of Snipes in the role, he is seen shooting a gun at an older photo of Eddie Murphy from the Coming to America days. With some crazy facial hair and some bold clothing choices, Wesley Snipes could be the scene-stealer of Coming 2 America.
Coming 2 America is directed by Craig Brewer, who previously directed Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, and, most recently, Dolemite Is My Name, which starred both Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes. The film was somewhat of a career restart for both Murphy and Snipes, and earned both actors several awards and nominations. Most notably, Dolemite Is My Name was called one of the best films of 2019 by the National Board of Review, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, with Murphy receiving a nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.
In addition to Wesley Snipes, Coming 2 America has an impressive cast of newcomers to this series. Jermaine Fowler, who has appeared in Sorry to Bother You and the upcoming Judas and the Black Messiah, is Akeem’s son, Lavelle, while Leslie Jones will play Lavelle’s mother, and Tracy Morgan is Reem, Lavelle’s uncle. The Old Guard’s KiKi Layne is Akeem’s first daughter, who believes she should be his successor to the throne, while the film also features Teyana Taylor and Rick Ross as himself.
Coming to America was a huge hit when it came out in 1988, making $128 million worldwide. While Coming 2 America was originally planned to come to theaters, Amazon Studios purchased the distribution rights to the film for a rumored $125 million. Reportedly, Amazon also purchased Borat Subsequent Moviefilm for a similar price last year as well. With a major sequel starring Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes, Amazon is on its way to becoming a huge service for new comedies.
After several decades Prince Akeem and Semmi are finally coming back, with new faces played by Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Jermaine Fowler, and others. Coming 2 America comes to Prime Video on March 5, 2021.
