Netflix is the home platform for many great releases that have broken the box office or have been misjudged on release, only to find new life and a fanbase on the platform. That could possibly be the case with 2018’s drama movie Welcome to Marwen, which features one of Steve Carell’s most controversial roles.

Suffering From Trauma

Welcome to Marwen follows Mark Hogencamp—portrayed by Steve Carell—an artist who is recovering from a brutal physical attack he suffered at the hands of a homophobic neo-Nazi group.

The film plays out in two different planes of existence—that of the artist, who goes through his healing process by enacting a variety of WWII scenarios using miniatures in a to-scale Belgian village he built in his backyard, and that of the (computer-animated) Nazi-fighting miniatures.

Marwencol

What makes Welcome to Marwen special is that it’s a dramatic reimagining of a 2010 documentary, Marwencol, which narrates artist Mark Hogencamp’s savage beating by homophobic bigots, which left him with severe physical consequences and memory loss, and his recovery from coma.

That’s right, Welcome to Marwen is based on real-life events, the true story of an artist who was attacked due to his love for wearing women’s high heels. However, adapting true stories isn’t always as straightforward as it might seem, which is precisely why this adaptation wasn’t a success.

Welcome To Marwen Missed The Mark

Celebrating the triumph of the human spirit and its ability to be truly indomitable at great costs is something that Hollywood has done since movies became a storytelling medium.

But trying to recreate a documentary that ultimately talks about the fragility of a soul into a movie that depicts a man healing through staging elaborate battles between his imaginary heroes and Nazis is a completely different and, arguably, completely unnecessary thing. In other words, Welcome to Marwen was bad, and its critical reception and earnings reflect that.

Everyone Liked Steve

Despite Steve Carell and the rest of the talented cast, the movie failed to captivate the audiences and critics, mostly due to the poorly written screenplay and inconsistent tone.

The critics did, however, praise Steve Carell’s performance, the performances of the cast, and the animated segments of the movie. Sadly, it’s a disjointed and clumsy reimagining of a rather sad and compelling story, and many emphasized the poorly written screenplay as the reason why the movie failed.

Ultimately, even the star power of Steve Carell couldn’t save Welcome to Marwen from flopping at the box office; the movie earned only $13.1 million, which was a fraction of its $39-50 million production budget, branding it as a box office bomb. It did, however, earn Leo Awards for Best Cinematography in a Motion Picture and Best Sound in 2019, on top of a dozen different award nominations.

Welcome to Marwen now stands as probably the worst movie with Steve Carell in it, but we still recommend watching it. If for no other reason, then I would like to see how a dramatic adaptation shouldn’t be done. Those interested can watch Welcome to Marwen on Netflix.
