We Now Know If Wednesday Will Get Season 2 On Netflix
Netflix will once again be “full of woe,” officially announcing that the show Wednesday Season 2 will be back on the streamer. The incredibly popular Jenna Ortega series is Tim Burton’s entry into the world of television and has managed to break streaming records in the short time it has been available. Small Screen reports that the show has been renewed a mere three weeks after the first season was dropped for viewing.
The spooky comedy follows Wednesday Addams as she attends the Nevermore Academy, the alma mater of her parents, Gomez and Morticia. While familiar Addams Family characters such as her parents, brother Pugsly, and Uncle Fester are not major characters the way they are in other stories about the oddball family, Wednesday is accompanied by the handy Thing as she tries to solve a mystery at the school. It involves her parents and the entire Addams Family lineage. Even as the story arc from the season winds up, she finds herself the recipient of a message that made the perfect opening for a Wednesday Season 2.
In addition to Jenna Ortega, Wednesday also starred Gwendoline Christie (Brienne on Game of Thrones) as Nevermore headmistress Larissa Weems. Plus, it guest-starred Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luis Guzman as Gomez.
In a brilliant stroke of casting, Christina Ricci also starred in the show as Nevermore teacher Ms. Thornhill. This was significant because the actress played Wednesday Addams in her youth; a performance that defined the character for a generation. Jenna Ortega took up the mantle offered by Christina Ricci’s acting and took it to the next level, practically guaranteeing that Wednesday Season 2 would be made with a combination of gallows humor, deadpan delivery, and impeccable comic timing.
Until recently, Stranger Things Season 4 was at the top of the Netflix charts for the most views in a single week. But Wednesday broke that record in its first week of airing, practically ensuring a season 2 would be made. In fact, there has already been buzz about a third season being discussed among the Netflix brass. It’s a move the streaming giant doesn’t usually make, preferring to renew each series one season at a time. Some popular series, such as Santa Clarita Diet, were never renewed despite high viewership and cliffhanger plots, and other properties like Warner Bros’ The Sandman have waited months to hear renewal plans.
With flagship Netflix shows like Stranger Things and The Crown nearing their conclusions, it was imperative the streamer find a new show to lead its library. Enter show co-writers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who had already planned out a few seasons when they approached the streamer to make the deal. Wednesday Season 2 was only contingent on the performance of the first season, and those expectations have been fulfilled.
Now, all that Wednesday fans need to do is sit back and eagerly await the premiere of season 2. It is definitely happening, and the exquisite torture our patience will have to endure until it is released would make Wednesday very proud.
