Warner Bros. Discovery Cancels Entire Network Fans Have Loved For Decades

Warner Bros Discovery has made quite a few moves since the merger that didn’t sit right with fans, and now fans of classic cartoons will join the disgruntled masses. The company announced that the Boomerang streaming service is canceled starting on September 30. This streaming service gave fans access to tons of classics like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Popeye, The Flintstones, and some more recent classic fan-favorites like Codename: Kids Next Door and Courage the Cowardly Dog.

There’s Another Way To Watch The Classics

The good news is, while the Boomerang streaming service is canceled, the linear channel is still available for fans who have cable or satellite, though that doesn’t make it as easy to simply pick and choose what you want to watch. Boomerang sent the message to subscribers recently, and notified them that their subscriptions would be changed over to Max’s ad-free plan. Warner Bros Discovery is making nice with these streamers a bit, as they currently aren’t changing the cost of their subscription.

Migrating To Max

This is actually a pretty good deal since the Boomerang streaming service is only $6 per month, while the ad-free tier of Max costs nearly three times as much as $17 per month. This helps lessen the sting of the Boomerang streaming service being canceled, but there’s also no guarantee that all the shows will make the jump over to Max.

At least these subscribers will get access to premium content like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, but there’s a chance that some fan-favorite shows and movies won’t be available right away, if at all.

Brace For A Catch

There’s also always the chance that the subscribers will eventually have to pay more for their Max subscription despite Boomerang being canceled. The message to subscribers did note that there will be no change to their subscription price but with the ominous caveat “until further notice.” They may end up having to pay more in the future to keep Max after all, but that remains to be seen.

Another Reason To Buy Physical Media

At this time, some of the content on the Boomerang canceled streaming service is already available to stream on Max, such as Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Looney Tunes, and some of the Scooby-Doo shows. You would think that Warner Bros Discovery would just move all the content over, but that’s one of the disadvantages of streaming that has caused people to slowly buy more physical media in recent years. While it’s nice to have the content while you have it, it doesn’t always last.

Over 20 Years Of Boomerang

Boomerang, the channel, has been around for over two decades now, first launching in 2000. It’s long been a great way for viewers to watch classic Warner Bros and Hanna-Barbera cartoons re-runs that no longer air on any other linear cable and satellite channels. The Boomerang streaming service came out in 2017 and gave fans a chance to watch these classics at their leisure before it was canceled this year.

Warner Bros Keeps Angering Fans

It seems likely that Warner Bros Discovery decided to cancel the Boomerang streaming service to further consolidate its revenue channels, but there’s also a chance that there weren’t enough subscribers to justify keeping the platform running.

The company hasn’t been shy about cutting costs, canceling numerous TV shows and even the Batgirl movie not too long ago. In any case, if you want to watch all of this content, it seems like Max is going to be your best option going forward.
