WandaVision has proven itself to be one of the twistiest and most surprising entries in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first part of Marvel’s Phase 4 experiment has kicked off with some truly mind-bending moments and has even taken the franchise into legitimate horror at times. And no episode yet has had the kind of terrifying implications we have seen in the fourth episode, “We Interrupt This Program”. In fact, this episode has solidified who one of the newest and most terrifying villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be. And it just happens to be one of the Avengers.
In the most recent episode of WandaVision, we jump back in time and learn exactly what has been going on this whole time. It appears that a town in New Jersey called Westview has either been created from scratch or has been wiped from the memories of anyone who ever knew about it. It is here that there seems to be some sort of alternate dimension bubble in the place where all the events of the show have been occurring. The agency S.W.O.R.D. – Sentient Weapons Observation and Response Division – has sent Monica Rambeau to investigate and she ends up getting sucked into the world. Once Wanda discovers she does not belong, it is here that we realize the terrifying truth of it all: Wanda is doing all of this.
Many fans have assumed that WandaVision would reveal that Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch was behind all these strange sitcom shenanigans, but “We Interrupt This Program” solidifies that in a truly disturbing way. When Wanda realizes that Monica is an outsider that is trespassing on her world, she violently expels her from the town and Monica realizes that Wanda is controlling everything. It’s the kind of moment that announces the arrival of a very new direction for the character, and one that anchors her role as a complicated but very dangerous antagonist moving forward.
This pivotal moment in WandaVision would seem to confirm a lot of what we have heard about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Spider-Man 3 planning to have villains from across all the different feature film versions of the franchise appear in it, it is almost certain that Wanda will be the reason for that. And if her attitude in this episode hints at her demeanor to come, it could be that she is ripping apart the multiverse on purpose. We have heard that she could be the primary antagonist in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and she is certainly giving off big supervillain vibes in “We Interrupt This Program”. Taking the most powerful Avenger and turning her into a villain sounds like one of the most exciting story developments in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We will be crossing the halfway point of WandaVision‘s run with next week’s episode and we are betting there will be even more revelations about Wanda’s villainous turn. Who are the residents of Westview that she has captured to be her “cast”? Are they former Hydra agents that she is getting revenge on? Or are they innocent people that have been swept up into her delusion? Things are getting truly juicy on WandaVision and we can’t wait to see where this all is going.
