Vincent D'Onofrio Kingpin Daredevil

Before Marvel unveiled their massive slate of upcoming Disney+ shows that would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel had several series on Netflix. These shows didn’t connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but instead told gritty, smaller stories that didn’t quite fit into their vision of where Marvel was going. But as the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows and grows, and showing no sign of stopping, it looks as though Marvel might start reintroducing some of these characters, including Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin from Daredevil.

Last year, the rights to Daredevil came back to Marvel after Netflix canceled the series. But even though none of these characters from Netflix’s Marvel series have previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, We Got This Covered is reporting a rumor that Vincent D’Onofrio could be returning to Marvel as Kingpin.

The theory that Marvel might start integrating characters from the various Netflix series into the Marvel Cinematic Universe began when Charlie Cox, who played the title role on Daredevil, was seen on the set of Spider-Man 3. This has led to all sorts of rumors, including that Jon Bernthal could be returning as Punisher, and now, that Vincent D’Onofrio could come back as Kingpin.

Vincent D'Onofrio Kingpin Daredevil

But even if Vincent D’Onofrio does return as Kingpin, it’s unclear which project he would appear in. While the third Spider-Man film makes sense, considering Charlie Cox’s apparent involvement, that film already has a ton of villains. With Jamie Foxx reprising his The Amazing Spider-Man 2 role of Electro and Alfred Molina bringing his Spider-Man 2 villain Doc Ock back, the next Spider-Man film might not have enough time to do Kingpin justice.

But if Marvel is in fact bringing back characters like Daredevil, Punisher, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, maybe there is a larger plan to reunite all the Netflix superheroes and villains into another project? Disney+ already has a packed slate for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean that another series focusing on these characters wouldn’t be wildly popular, especially for those who have been hoping their favorite Netflix characters would eventually join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yet considering how quickly and surprisingly Netflix canceled all of their Marvel series, including other shows like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, it does seem like there was a purpose for this mass cancellation. Many of the cast members of these shows – including Vincent D’Onofrio – have talked about how they wanted to return to the world of Marvel. Maybe their introduction to this world has been part of a bigger plan all along, one that we’re just having revealed as the multiverse looks to open in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Vincent D'Onofrio Kingpin Jon Bernthal

If Charlie Cox does appear in the third Spider-Man film as Daredevil, that could open up the floodgates for other characters from the Netflix Marvel series to appear. We could easily have Jon Bernthal or Vincent D’Onofrio bringing their characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some future project, or maybe as cameos in other films. We won’t have long to wait to find out, though, as the third Spider-Man comes out at the end of this year.
