Since his first appearance on Netflix’s Daredevil years ago, Vincent D’Onofrio won over the hearts of Marvel fans with his unyielding performance portraying the terrifyingly large crime boss, Kingpin. Since the show’s cancellation, fans have hoped to see the Full Metal Jacket actor reprise his role in a Marvel Cinematic Universe return. And while much of the rumor mill over the past few months have hinted at a possible return for the supervillain in the upcoming Spiderman: No Way Home, it looks like Marvel may have already revealed the character in the most recent episode of Hawkeye.
You can see photos of what many fans believe to be Vincent D’Onofrio in Hawkeye episode three below.
The third episode of the Hawkeye series, titled Echoes, aired on Disney Plus today, and fans of Kingpin were surely elated when the newly introduced villain Maya Lopez–known as Echo to Marvel fans–made her appearance. In the comics, Echo is the adopted daughter and protege of Wilson Fisk, otherwise known as Kingpin. And as if that subtle fact isn’t enough to convince fans of an upcoming Kingpin appearance, a flashback to a young Maya all but confirms it.
In the flashback, a young Maya is shown to be meeting a large unseen man known only as “Uncle” who appears to be her guardian. The man, wearing Vincent D’Onofrio’s signature Kingpin ensemble, playfully grabs young Maya’s cheek as he gives her a lighthearted chuckle. To play into the hints even more, Clint reveals later on in the episode that there’s someone around Maya that’s even more dangerous. Likewise, Maya also reveals that her father was killed by Clint as Ronin, at a place known as “Fat Man Auto Repair” which fans believe to be another hint pointing to Kingpin’s large stature. You can hear the chuckle of Maya’s uncle in the video from the Hawkeye episode below.
There have been plenty of hints and clues pointing to Vincent D’Onofrio’s return to the character via Hawkeye before the newest episode aired today. When the first two episodes aired last week and the show announced that someone had bought Stark towers, fans instantly jumped on the theory that the Avengers tower may have been bought by Kingpin himself. Likewise, the actor has done little to distance himself from the rumors surrounding his return, and many believe that D’Onofrio has been teasing at his participation in Hawkeye.
If Vincent D’Onofrio does make an official appearance in Hawkeye, it will be the character’s first appearance in the official Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the New York City crime overlord has been battling with superheroes such as Spiderman, The Punisher, and Daredevil for over fifty years, it was D’Onofrio’s portrayal of the crime boss that would bring one of Marvel’s most iconic villains to popular culture. His multi-dimensional performance as Kingpin not only won over the hearts of Marvel fans but also earned the actor a slew of accolades for the portrayal. While Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege himself has already confirmed that none of the previous Marvel series airing on Netflix will be canon to the MCU, that hasn’t stopped D’Onofrio from voicing his desire to once again take up the mantle of Kingpin.
