Vincent D’onofrio Delivers Crushing Crossover News For Marvel Spider-Man Fans

By Douglas Helm | Published

Everyone was ecstatic when Vincent D’Onofrio appeared as the villainous Kingpin in Hawkeye, making his debut in the MCU and reprising the role from the Netflix Daredevil series. With Kingpin officially being a part of the MCU now, many fans wonder when the crime boss will cross paths with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Unfortunately, even D’Onofrio isn’t sure about the possibility, as he recently talked to interviewer Steve Weintraub at a Fan Expo Boston panel, saying, “So there are characters, Marvel characters, invented by Marvel, written by Marvel, that are caught in between Marvel and Sony,” adding “It takes a long time for them to figure out who’s doing what and where.”

The Ongoing Marvel And Sony Rights Argument

In other words, the continued sharing of character rights between Sony and Marvel may mean that there are obstacles to getting a Kingpin and Spider-Man meet-up on the big screen. Plus there’s the fact that we don’t even know when we’ll see Tom Holland’s Spidey next, after he wrapped up his initial MCU run of films with Spider-Man: No Way Home. While there’s supposedly a fourth movie in the works, nothing has been officially announced, and we have no idea when that movie might come out.

Kingpin Is Becoming A Prominent Part Of The MCU

So, we don’t know if and when Kingpin might cross paths with Spider-Man in the MCU, but at least we can look forward to Vincent D’onofrio reprising the role in future projects. After being a major part of both Hawkeye and Echo, Kingpin was last seen ominously considering a run for mayor of New York City, which would undoubtedly have big implications for Spidey when we eventually do see him back on the big screen.

Whether the two meet on-screen is another conversation, but it’s hard to imagine that Marvel wouldn’t take the opportunity to have New York’s most famous hero interact with a crime boss mayor.

Appearing In Daredevil: Born Again

In the meantime, we should likely expect to see Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin pop up again in Daredevil: Born Again, which is in the process of getting creatively retooled after Marvel was unhappy with the episodes they had brewing. We’ll also see Charlie Cox reprising his role as Daredevil in the series after playing the character for the Netflix Marvel series. Cox also appeared in Echo, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which marked his first appearance in the MCU.

Originally A Spider-Man Villain

As comic fans know, Kingpin made his first appearance as a Spider-Man villain, so there will surely be a day when we see him face-off with the MCU Spider-Man. In recent years, the character has appeared as the main antagonist in Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and as a minor antagonist in the first Insomniac Spider-Man game for the PS4. While the character may not be interacting with the MCU Spidey, he’s still been represented plenty in other media.

There’s always a chance that we could see Kingpin and Spider-Man pop up in a big crossover event like Avengers: Secret Wars, but we’ll just have to wait and see. While we wait, you can check out Hawkeye and Echo on Disney+. You can catch the next MCU film, Deadpool & Wolverine, in theaters this July.
