Vin Diesel is probably a household name at this point. Diesel is best known for his role in the Fast and Furious franchise, which also helped him leap to top-level stardom. The films in the franchise have been a huge box office draw over the years and have also been met with good reviews from fans and critics. However, it is not one of these Diesel films that is blowing up on streaming. Riddick, which was released back in 2013 and is the third film in the Riddick franchise, seems to be getting a large amount of love and attention on streaming for HBO Max, where the movie is currently in the top ten most-watched list.
Vin Diesel first introduced the character of Riddick in the 2000 film titled Pitch Black. Having a passion for the role, Diesel reprised the role once again in The Chronicles of Riddick in 2004. Unfortunately, the sequel didn’t do too well and was, for the most part, a box office flop. Despite this, in 2013, Riddick was brought to the screen once again with the third installment in the franchise titled Riddick.
For those who aren’t too familiar with the Riddick franchise, the movies focus on the main character, Richard B. Riddick, played by the talented Vin Diesel himself. In the first installment, Pitch Black, we were introduced to Riddick, a dangerous fugitive. While being transported to prison in a spaceship, the ship crashes, and the survivors, including Riddick, have to fight off the alien inhabitants. For fans of sci-fi and action, this film seems to be a perfect mix of everything in that genre.
The sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, follows Riddick after the major events in the first film. The second movie focuses on the character trying to avoid being caught and taken to prison. As mentioned above, this sequel was considered a box office flop. On top of that, it received a large number of negative reviews from critics.
However, Vin Diesel had such a strong connection to the character, that despite the negative response to the second installment, he played the role once again in Riddick, which is now taking off on streaming on HBO Max. The film continues to follow Riddick’s survival on a dangerous planet, while simultaneously trying to avoid being caught and being locked in prison. Diesel’s character also faces frightening, predatory alien creatures on the planet. The movie is full of action, adventure, creepy aliens to haunt your dreams, and of course, the iconic Vin Diesel. It makes sense why the film seems to be a popular option on streaming sites such as HBO Max. Riddick currently has an IMDb score of 6.4 and is rising in popularity on the charts.
For fans of the franchise and Vin Diesel’s iconic character, Riddick, there is a lot of excitement to hold onto. Apparently, there will be a fourth installment added. According to GamesRadar, Diesel brought up the topic of the movie and where it was in the production phase. He said, “[Director] David Twohy, he wrote a great script. It’s just a matter of timing when we get that opportunity to shoot that…” It seems that slowly but surely, the fourth Riddick film is coming together, especially if a script has already been written.
The fourth film is titled Riddick 4: Furya. According to Movie Web, the movie’s plot will follow Riddick and the beginning of his story, including how he became such a skilled and dangerous criminal in the first place. There is currently no set release date of when the film will possibly hit theaters, but the premise of the fourth movie is definitely interesting. Vin Diesel is also working on the final sequels to the Fast and Furious franchise. One of the final sequels is set to hit theaters in 2023.
Not a lot of actors would reprise a role again and again on a movie that isn’t considered a box office success, but Vin Diesel has never been able to let go of this one. Though it’s been years since Riddick released, fans are still loving it today as they check it out on HBO Max and drive it into the top ten rankings on streaming. Maybe this is why Vin Diesel is so ready to go ahead and return to the favored role for a fourth time all these years later.
