Vin Diesel recently revealed that Marvel Studios is interested in developing a Planet X movie, presumably starring his beloved Groot character. Via his enormously popular Instagram account (currently 83 million followers and counting), Vin Diesel posted a picture of Baby Groot resting in a pool in the classic “cucumber slices over eyes” relaxation pose. The caption states that Vin Diesel’s niece thanked him for making the recent Disney+ series of I Am Groot shorts, followed with “No wonder Marvel wants to make the Planet X movie.”

Vin Diesel has been playing Groot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014, quickly becoming a fan-favorite character despite being entirely CGI and only having the one line of “I am Groot.” However, Vin Diesel’s noted voice talents allowed him to bring true empathy and depth to a character that could have been a side-note in Marvel history, with Groot being brought back as Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and in subsequent films. Now, Vin Diesel seems to be hinting at a feature film future for Groot, presumably titled Planet X

Within Marvel Comics canon, Groot is part of an alien species known as Flora colossi, originating from the vaguely named Planet X. In his first appearance in Tales to Astonish in 1960, Groot was actually portrayed as a villainous alien invader seeking to capture humans for study, and his next appearance saw him battling the Hulk. However, it seems that the Groot most audiences are familiar with via Vin Diesel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe depiction of the Guardians of the Galaxy is distinct from that initial entity, which is helpful for making him cuddly.

The I Am Groot series launched on Disney+ in August with five episodes, with another five episodes forthcoming. Vin Diesel reprised the role of Groot, as did Bradley Cooper as his best friend/partner/ Rocket Raccoon; the series was created by Kirsten Lepore, who also served as both head writer and director. While the series has not had the kind of cultural attention paid to, say, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, it has been praised for its light tone and photorealistic imagery.

There are no announced plans for a Planet X movie, except for Vin Diesel making a quick comment about Marvel on his social media. On the other hand, for all of the criticism that Marvel Studios plays safe in terms of narrative, it does often green-light surprising projects like Eternals and Moon Knight. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that we could soon be hearing Vin Diesel in Marvel’s own Planet X film.

Outside of his work with Marvel, Vin Diesel has his own franchises to mind. The tenth Fast and Furious movie, Fast X, will co-star Brie Larson, Jason Momoa, and most of the returning crew, while we have previously reported that Vin Diesel is working on a new xXx movie. Perhaps soon, Groot will be getting his own big-screen project too.
