Venom 3 Changes Release Date Because Of Election Fears
The release of Venom 3 will now happen on October 25, having been pushed up by its distributor, Sony, in an attempt to avoid lackluster returns due to the 2024 Presidential Election. The November 8th date that Sony had scheduled was a little too close for comfort, amid fears that Americans will be too distracted by the election to even bother going to the theater.
Other Movies Moving
It’s a move that other distributors have considered, with every major release either pushed up or set back so that filmgoers will have buffers on either side of ballot-casting on November 5.
With this move regarding Venom 3, Variety reports that there is no longer a single major film set for its debut the first week of November. The closest after Election Day will be the highly anticipated Gladiator 2, which hits theaters on November 22.
The following weekend, theater screens across the United States will debut both Wicked and Moana 2, beginning on November 27.
Exhausted By Politics?
There is another school of thought that might make Sony’s change of Venom 3‘s release date a questionable move. As polls show that many Americans are exhausted by politics, a newly released film might serve as a welcome distraction from what’s irritating some citizens.
A great historical example was Universal’s decision to stay the course and keep its iconic The Wolf Man on schedule for its December 9 debut at theaters, amid fears that the attack on Pearl Harbor would distract potential audience members from going to the theater.
Venom 3 Originally Scheduled For Summer 2024
It was a great move for Universal, however, as people were eager to escape reality even for a couple of hours and attended the debut weekend in droves.
Sony’s change of release date is the second time outside circumstances have altered Venom 3’s nationwide debut.
The third Venom installment was originally set for a summer 2024 release, but the months-long SAG-AFTRA strike delayed it four months instead of an Independence Day weekend premiere.
Venom: The Last Dance
Venom 3 (official title Venom: The Last Dance) brings back screenwriter Kelly Marcel in a dual role as writer and director. Though credited with penning the previous two Venom films as well as the screen plays for Fifty Shades of Grey and Saving Mr. Banks, Venom: The Last Dance serves as the first time Marcel has sat at the helm of a production.
Tom Hardy Returning
Venom 3 brings back Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, and co-stars Clark Backo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Juno Temple. It will be the sixth film in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, based on the character from Marvel Comics.
High Expectations For Venom 3
The expectations for a high box office return are high for Venom 3, as the first two installments of the films that follow the alien symbiote have established incredible showings at theaters worldwide. Venom (2018) raked in more than $850 million of its $100 million production budget.
The 2021 follow-up Venom: Let There be Carnage ran with a similar budget and had a box office return of nearly $510 million.
