Venom 3 Delayed, Will It Get Canceled?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Venom 3 is among a raft of productions that have been halted because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, though no indication has yet been made that the film will be canceled. The possibility of the strike has been on the horizon for some time, leading many productions to construct contingency plans in case it did indeed move forward.
Production on Venom 3 is delayed because of the Actors’ Strike.
Many productions, however, are unable to continue so long as actors have joined writers in picketing for better contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Venom 3 joins a list of halted productions that is sure to grow in the coming days, including Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2, Deadpool 3, Gladiator 2, and the live-action remake of Disney‘s Lilo & Stitch.
For its part, Tom Hardy’s Venom 3 builds on the somewhat surprising success of two previous installments and shows the continued drawing power of Spider-Man-adjacent films.
The seventh installment of Mission: Impossible, Dead Reckoning Part 1, has opened to wide, enthusiastic acclaim ahead of its now-stalled sequel, while Lilo & Stitch seems a bit of a head-scratcher as the next in a string of live-action adaptations of its animated hits. A new version of The Little Mermaid that met with middling to positive reviews and a spate of online controversy opened earlier this year.
For its part, Tom Hardy’s Venom 3 builds on the somewhat surprising success of two previous installments and shows the continued drawing power of Spider-Man-adjacent films. The film is a co-production of Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, whose head Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito sent out a staff e-mail on Thursday regarding the pause that is hitting the multiple Marvel TV and film productions already in progress.
The pair said jointly that they hoped for a speedy resolution to the negotiations, but that production schedules, however tightly planned, are often fraught with unforeseen change and delay.
As Venom 3 reaches a stopping point in its production, that delay is likely keenly felt by star Tom Hardy, who conceived the film with writing collaborator Kelly Marcel. The story of the film, whose script was written by Marcel, is not currently known in any significant detail, though there have been some casting announcements. The film will feature Chiwetel Ejiofor, who appeared in Doctor Strange as Karl Mordo, though it’s not clear what role he will be playing.
The cast of Venom 3 also includes Juno Temple, who has recently appeared in the TV series Fargo and Ted Lasso, as well as the miniseries The Offer about the making of The Godfather.
Venom 3 Director Kelly Marcel
Marcel, whose previous writing credits include the two previous Venom films, along with Cruella, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Saving Mr. Banks, is directing the new movie, whose production only just began late last month in Spain.
Previously an actor, Marcel moved to writing after realizing in her mid-twenties that she “hated” acting.Venom 3 will be Marcel’s first time in the director’s chair and further solidifies her ongoing professional relationship with Tom Hardy.
While plot details for the new alien spider mutant film have not been released, the momentum behind the oddball Spider-Man spinoff continues, despite an initial poor reception for the first film in the series. Production on the latest installment will resume once the strike reaches a conclusion.
