The Twisted Psychological Thriller Hulu Series Stars A Comedy Legend
Steve Carell is best known for his comedy performances in projects such as The Office, The 40 Year Old Virgin, and the Despicable Me franchise. However, recent performances in films like Last Flag Flying, Vice, and Asteroid City have proven to audiences far and wide that Carell is capable of bolstering a genuine dramatic performance as well. One recent miniseries that Carell leads, FX’s The Patient, puts his dramatic acting to the test, resulting in a disturbing psychological thriller for the ages.
Steve Carell And Domhnall Gleeson Lead The Patient
The Patient was created and written by the duo behind the hit spy series The Americans, Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg. The duo also serve as showrunners for the gripping series, which originally ran its 10 episodes on Hulu from late Summer to early Fall of 2022. Steve Carell is joined in the series by a terrific cast consisting of The White House Plumbers‘ Domhnall Gleeson, as well as Andrew Leeds, Laura Niemi, Amy Handelman, Linda Emond, and They Cloned Tyrone‘s David Alan Grier.
Kidnapped By The Patient
The thrilling mini-series centers on renowned therapist Alan Strauss, who is kidnapped from his home and chained to the floor of a dank basement by a deranged patient of his, named Sam. After coming to terms with his sudden imprisonment, Alan is tasked by the patient to assist him in curbing his psychopathic urge to murder the people around him. Sam reveals that he has killed an untold number of people in the past, even though he attempts to resist his ritualistic urges.
Alan Battles His Own Demons
Throughout the run-time of The Patient, Alan attempts to reason with his captor to set him free, while also offering genuine therapeutic advice to the crazed killer, to little avail. As he struggles with his confinement, Alan also attempts to come to terms with the recent loss of his beloved wife, and the strained relationship he shares with his son Ezra.
A major focal point of the series is faith, as highlighted by the growing divide between Dr. Strauss and Ezra, who is shown to have become incredibly devoted to his Jewish faith in the past decade through a series of flashbacks.
The Patient Is Bingeworthy
Fans of the show are sure to remain on the edge of their seat for the entire 10 episodes, hoping against odds to see Alan freed from his makeshift prison and reunited with his son so that they can reconcile their differences. The Patient also wowed critics, resulting in an 89 percent certified fresh critic score on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Unfortunately, there have been no talks to continue The Patient for a second season, as the show’s brief 10-episode run culminated in a closed loop with very few open ends left to explore. The creators of the show completed their stated goal in a single season, offering an intense therapy session reminiscent of the greatest episodes of The Sopranos. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of binging the hit mini-series, or those who are already due for a rewatch, The Patient is currently available to stream on Hulu.
