Twilight Is Coming Back Bigger Than Ever

The news comes as a delight for fans, who haven’t had a new installment since the release of Breaking Dawn: Part II more than a decade ago. The new Twilight series takes a different approach than what theatergoers experienced with the five films, however. Rather than a live-action series, the upcoming endeavor will be animated.

How this will play out with fans remains to be seen, but those who love the films and the books they were based upon are lighting up social media platforms with immeasurable excitement. The new Twilight series will likely serve as yet another giant money-maker, following the multi-billion dollar returns on the novels and original five films.

Twilight was first published in 2005, with the three sequels (New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn) written and released in the three years that followed. Following the main four novels are two companion novels (also written by Meyer) and a novella, all of which combined for more than 160 million in book sales. The Twilight series was arguably more successful on the big screen, with the five movies combining for a worldwide box office gross of more than $3.3 billion.

The Twilight series follows teenage Bella Swan, whose family has just moved to the Pacific Northwest community of Forks, Washington. As the new girl in school, she becomes enraptured by fellow student Edward Cullen. As the novel and film progresses, it’s revealed that Cullen and his family are part of a coven of vampires.

Over the course of the Twilight series, Bella develops a strong bond with another student Jacob Black. As a shapeshifting werewolf, Jacob saves Bella from an evil vampire. The complicated love triangle that was constructed around Edward, Bella, and Jacob becomes one of the major focal points of the series and prompted Meyer to write an entire novel based on Edward’s perspective in 2020 (Midnight Sun).

Few details about the upcoming Twilight series have been made available to the public. Though Lionsgate is at the helm of production, it has not yet been determined who will voice the characters or how true to the novels the series will be. Additionally, no release date has been officially set, and there is no news as to what streaming service Twilight Universe fans will be able to view it on.

Lionsgate also announced that they are exploring an additional series for their popular John Wick film character. Last year fans of the Wick films were able to see a prequel, released as The Continental. This series consisted of three 90-minute episodes on Peacock.

The news of another John Wick-based series and the Twilight series bodes well for Lionsgate, who seem to have two promising shows for the small screen.
