Twilight’s Midnight Sun: Are We Getting Another Edward And Bella Movie?
There are currently no plans for a Twilight: Midnight Sun movie because it would need to involve the original cast.
One of the biggest announcements to come from the Twilight franchise in quite some time was when a new novel, Midnight Sun released in August 2020. It had been rumored since 2008 and took more than a decade to hit shelves. But it finally did, much to fans’ delight. Immediately, it begged the question whether or not we would see a Twilight: Midnight Sun movie.
So, what is this new entry into the Twilight saga? Will it be the further adventures of our hero Edward and heroine Bella? And are we getting a Twilight: Midnight Sun movie? Here’s what we know so far…
TWILIGHT MIDNIGHT SUN LEAKED ONLINE BEFORE PUBLICATION
Stephenie Meyer had most of the Midnight Sun written and was ready to move forward with it until a few of the chapters were leaked online. So, the best-selling author put a stop to those plans and waited. And waited. And waited a bit longer.
Meyer told The New York Times why she finally decided to publish the Twilight book a couple of years ago. “Because I finished it. The reason it wasn’t published earlier was because it was not done, and when I did see the light at the end of the tunnel — when I saw that I was actually going to be able to finish it — I started the publication process right away, because I knew there were people who had been waiting really kindly and patiently, but also anxiously, for quite a while.”
MIDNIGHT SUN IS THE SAME STORY AS TWILIGHT, BUT FROM EDWARD’S PERSPECTIVE
While Midnight Sun is a “new” novel, the story itself has been told before. By the author even. This book is a retelling of her initial Twilight book, only this one will be told from Edward Cullen’s perspective. Meyer has taken the events from her first novel and put them down again, but now readers will see it from Edward’s point of view.
Meyer spoke of the Twilight book’s plot and how difficult it’d be to spoil it, “I mean, it’s difficult to spoil this book because spoiler: Edward falls in love with Bella. That’s all known, so it’s difficult to spoil it.” But the story will have a decidedly different take on the events from the first novel as they will be seen through inhuman eyes.”
So then, is there anything new in the book? “The stuff they’re going to get that’s new is, like I said, the inhuman point of view and then the time away.” It also seems the author had a better time writing Edward than she did Bella. “The best parts to write, hands down, were the times that Bella was not present, and I wasn’t locked into a certain set of dialogues and actions. That was when I felt he could be more himself.”
Fans are excited about the new Twilight book. So excited that when Meyer first announced that Midnight Sun would finally see the light of day, the overwhelming excitement broke the author’s website. She had started a countdown to release but the traffic it brought with it caused the page to crash.
What fans REALLY want to know, though, is will there be a Twilight: Midnight Sun movie?
TWILIGHT: MIDNIGHT SUN MOVIE AS THE HARDWICKE CUT
We now have the Justice League’s Snyder Cut, talk of a David Ayer’s Suicide Squad director’s cut, and now, could there be a Catherine Hardwicke Twilight director’s cut? As Hardwicke told Entertainment Tonight, more than likely, no. The idea of making it happen, as Hardwicke stated, would be “difficult.”
The main reason it’s so tough is that the first Twilight was set “a lot more in Bella’s head.” The book, coming directly from Edward’s eyes, would make it difficult to recut the movie, instead it’d have to be a totally new movie, though Hardwicke says, “[It] would be fun. It would be fascinating,” about the idea of a Twilight: Midnight Sun movie. With so much time already have passed, how could they? Or an even bigger thought…
TWILIGHT CAST WOULD HAVE TO RETURN
Hardwicke danced around the question of whether she might be able to get her original Twilight cast back for another movie. “Rob is Batman now… and Kristen is in a million beautiful projects,” she said. “Who knows what would happen.”
There is one person from the original who would probably give it a resounding “No” if asked to be in Twilight: Midnight Sun. That would be series star Anna Kendrick who, if you don’t recall, played Bella’s best friend in the Twilight movies.
While Kendrick appreciates the films, she also compared it to being in a “hostage situation.” She was miserable. “I just remember being so cold and miserable,” she said to Vanity Fair via Digital Spy. “I remember my converse being completely soaked through and feeling like, ‘Y’know, this is a really great group of people, and I’m sure that we would be friends at a different time, but I wanna murder everyone,'” she added. So, the chances are Kendrick would not be available for a Twilight do-over.
What about Rob and Kristen returning for Twilight: Midnight Sun? The two may possibly be up for a reunion and even though the two do not look older, they are. Trying to turn them back into teens, even though Edward is the undead, may be a tricky task. But it is Hollywood we’re talking about here. They can do anything if there’s money in it, just watch The Irishman if you don’t believe that (good movie, creepy de-aging effects).
Bottom line. Another Twilight movie based on Midnight Sun could happen. Money talks. Right now, though, there aren’t any official plans. Wait and see how well the book is received and that may tell us a lot about how likely a Twilight: Midnight Sun movie is.
