True Detective’s Biggest Stars Reunite For Apple Comedy
Matthew McConaughy and Woody Harrelson, stars of True Detective's first and best season, will play best friends in a new AppleTV half-hour comedy.
Time is a flat circle, which means it was only inevitable that Matthew McConaughy and Woody Harrelson would reunite. Deadline reports that the pair, friends for over 20 years that will even vacation together, will be on-screen again for the first time since True Detective Season 1 in 2014. The two will star in an untitled AppleTV half-hour comedy series as an odd couple of best friends living with their families on a ranch in Texas.
The Big Door Prize showrunner David West Read, a writer for the Eugene Levy hit comedy Schitt’s Creek, created the series. The unnamed show will explore the bond between the two friends as that friendship is tested living on the same ranch. Which one is Oscar and which is Felix has yet to be decided, but every odd-couple comedy draws from the original long-running concept of a slob and a neat freak living side-by-side.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have a strange chemistry that helped make HBO’s True Detective an immediate hit with critics and fans alike. The pair starred as, respectively, Rustin “Rust” Cole and Martin “Marty” Hart, Louisiana State Police detectives investigating a murder in 1995 and then dealing with the fallout of the event in 2012. Jumping back and forth through time added to the twisting narrative, examining how the initial investigation was handled and how each man’s relationships and emotions suffered as a direct result.
Though the long-time friends were the headliners, the rest of the cast was nominated for their share of awards, including Alexandra Daddario, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, Tony Kittles, Erin Moriarty, Michael Harney, and Kevin Dunn. The first season was nominated for 29 major awards, only winning a small handful. Still considered the best season of the series and one of the strongest television seasons in history, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are a very large reason for its success.
The pair previously worked on the films Welcome to Hollywood, EdTV, and Surfer Dude. Not only do they enjoy collaborating, but they also vacation together with their families and have done so for over a decade now. Referring to these vacations as “friendship tours,” it’s not a surprise to anyone that they would want to work together again.
AppleTV is home to other famous pairings, including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston on The Morning Show, Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista on See, Ben Stiller and Adam Scott on Severence, and the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. One of the smallest streaming services can get the biggest stars; sooner rather than later, the strategy will pay off for the tech company.
Though there’s no release date for the Matthew McConaughy and Woody Harrelson comedy, fans of the two can go back and enjoy True Detective on HBO Max. The fourth season of the show, starring Jodie Foster and set in Alaska, is expected later this year or early in 2024. Harrelson’s latest movie, Champions, is in theaters now.
