True Detective Season 5 Showrunner Confirms Major Changes

By Britta DeVore | Published

To put it in the kindest way possible, True Detective fans were pretty torn on the most recent season, sub-headed Night Country. But love it or hate it, showrunner Issa Lopez will be returning to back True Detective Season 5 and revealed that, while the team is just in the writing process, things are going to be “completely different,” adding, “There’s different characters, different setting, different story – and I’m enjoying it like crazy.”

A Blast

She also hit followers with a very promising teaser, saying that True Detective Season 5 would be “a blast,” pointing to the adventures yet to come from the HBO anthology series.

While she can’t divulge much information, including whether it will center on two women again, Issa Lopez wanted to make it clear that the upcoming season will be a “completely different adventure.”

Ties To Previous Seasons

One of the biggest hits and misses with fans who tuned in for Night Country was the ties that it made to the early seasons of the mystery series, specifically the connections with the uber-popular first season.

Some absolutely loved that Issa Lopez and her team connected Jodie Foster and Kali Reis’ characters to Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle, while others felt like it was a cop-out.

When she was asked if similar plot points were being made for True Detective Season 5, Lopez said that while it’s still being kept under wraps, she believed that audiences “will be pleasantly surprised,” tossing an ominous “We’ll see” at the end of her statement.

The Mute Button

And about all the backlash and hate that Issa Lopez and the rest of the crew behind Night Country faced from the merciless trolling of unseen faces hidden by their computers? The showrunner said she simply hit the “Mute” button.

She went on to note that, when it comes to any sort of TV show or movie, “Not everyone is going to love it,” and that was “fantastically OK” with her. Now, with True Detective Season 5 in her sights, Lopez certainly has a better idea of how intense the fandom can be when they disagree with the story being told.

Night Country

True Detective: Night Country took audiences for a chill-down in Ennis, Alaska where they met Jodie Foster’s Police Chief Liz Danvers and Kali Reis’ Trooper Evangeline Navarro. The pair shared some sordid history from a case they previously worked together and were now in charge of uncovering the truth behind what happened to a group of men who seemingly froze to death while working at the remote Tsalal Research Station.

Just as we’ve seen in all the True Detective seasons that came before, and as we’re sure to see again in Season 5, nothing is as it seems and Danvers and Navarro go on a wild goose chase hunting down lead after lead.

More News To Come

As for its ties to Season 1, True Detective: Night Country tied in the father of Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cole who was already established to live in the snowy state back when the debut season aired.

There were also less specific ties between corrupt families and corporations and a symbol that drew a parallel between the mystical events that happened in Season 1 and the things that occurred out on the ice in Night Country.

Whether Lopez plans to circle back around to any of this for True Detective Season 5 will be the most sought-after question until the series returns.

Further information regarding True Detective Season 5 like its casting and release date is fully up in the air but you can get caught up on the first four seasons now streaming on Max.
