True Detective is an anthology series that ran for three seasons between 2014 and 2019, following troubled detectives facing both their inner demons and dark and macabre cases. Each season follows different characters, different actors, and different storylines, beginning with Matthew McConaughey, Alexandria Daddario, and Woody Harrelson; and adding Colin Ferrel, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Mahershala Ali in seasons two and three. After a long wait, True Detective season 4 added Jodie Foster, and now Deadline has reported five stars to round out the cast for the returning hit.

According to the Deadline report, the newest installment of the series will include John Hawkes (DeadwoodThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Christopher Eccleston (Dr. WhoThor: Dark World), Fiona Shaw (Harry PotterAndor), Finn Bennett (The NeversHope Gap), and Anna Lambe (TricksterThe Grizzlies). The cast is brought together to support The Silence of the Lambs actor in her first adult television series and Kali Reis (Catch the Fair One). Season 4 of True Detective, subtitled Nightfall, will follow Foster and Reis, two cops investigating the strange disappearance of the six people that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station.

John Hawkes will play Hank Prior, described as a police officer with old grudges lurking under the surface of a calm facade in True Detective Season 4. Hawkes is known for starring in films such as Winter’s BoneThe Sessions (where he was nominated for Academy and Golden Globe Awards), American Gangster, and Lincoln, but may be best known for assisting Timothy Olyphant in Deadwood. He is primarily seen in character roles with calm, and somewhat meek demeanors.

Christopher Eccleston will play Ted Corsaro in True Detective Season 4, the chief of police with a long and complicated history with Jodie Foster’s Liz Danvers and aspirations of a political career. Eccleston appeared in many movies and stage plays in the 90s throughout America and the UK, like Gone in 60 SecondsThe Others, and 28 Days Later. He gained widespread acclaim for returning the beloved Dr. Who to the screen for the first time in a decade in the 2005 revival of the series; after only one series, he moved on and appeared in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and Thor: The Dark World

Finn Bennett is somewhat just cutting his teeth in Hollywood as the small number of projects he has on his resume includes the role of Marcellus in the Roman historical epic series Domina. In True Detective Season 4, he will play Danvers’ protege, and with the same last name as Hawkes’s character, maybe a child of another character. Anna Lambe is equally fresh on the Hollywood scene and will play a nurse who gets highly protective against anyone who messes with her family.

Jodie Foster is the level of actress that can carry an entire production on the big screen alongside actors such as Dave Bautista, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, and Matthew McConaughey. In her return to TV, she is taking a cast of highly talented actors and bringing back a highly regarded and character-driven TV series in True Detective Season 4.
