Tron Creator Reveals His Role Behind The Scenes Of Tron 3
Tron creator Steven Lisberger is working as an advisor on Tron: Ares.
The upcoming Tron 3, aka Tron: Ares, is making sure to respect its elders. Steven Lisberger, who wrote and directed the original 1982 film, recently spoke on a podcast and said he is on board as an advisor and mentor to the filmmakers of the upcoming Disney threequel. Speaking on the It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Lisberger said, “My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact,” adding, “I try to say something that is useful to them without getting into the weeds.” (via The Hollywood Reporter)
The revered Tron was a groundbreaking film in the 1980s, though it wasn’t as warmly received as it is today. Now that it is considered a beloved classic, it’s smart that the Tron 3 filmmakers will be looking to Lisberger for advice to take the franchise forward.
As Lisberger points out in the interview, the film was ahead of its time and follows a computer engineer (Jeff Bridges) who gets sucked into a digital world known as The Grid, where he teams up with freedom fighters Tron and Yori to free the programs from the oppressive Sark and the Master Control Program.
The franchise would return to the big screen in 2010 with Tron: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund as Flynn’s son, who also gets sucked into the Grid, where his father has been trapped for the last 20 years. The plot for the sequel was decent, but the stunning visuals and the incredible soundtrack by Daft Punk really helped to elevate the film. Hopefully, Tron 3 will be able to reach the lofty highs of the original or at least the satisfactory level of the sequel.
Tron 3 has been in the works for over a decade, so it’s a relief to see that it’s officially being made in the first place, especially knowing some of the original creative minds of the franchise will help to guide it. Director Joachim Ronning is taking the reins this time around, with Jared Leto and Evan Peters set to star. Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne wrote the screenplay.
Not too much is known about the plot of Tron 3, but it has been reported to be about a sentient program that crosses over from the Grid into the human world. While the previous films have largely taken place in the Grid, it seems like this new film will jump back and forth between the digital world and our world. Reports say that Leto is set to star as the sentient program, which is known as Ares.
Evan Peters‘ role has yet to be announced, but two roles in the Tron 3 script indicate who he might be playing. There is a key role for a solider in the digital role and a key role for an awkward gamer in the human world. Based on Peters’ previous roles, it seems likely that he might play the gamer role, but that remains to be seen.
Tron 3 is set to start filming in Vancouver in August. There’s no word yet on an official release date for the film. We’ll keep you updated on any new developments in the meantime.
