Trap Is Another Secret M. Night Shyamalan Sequel?
Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has become known for being a master of the surprise film twist and he’s also no stranger to making sequels of his movies. In fact, 2000’s Unbreakable ended up becoming the beginning of a trilogy with the release of Split in 2016 and Glass in 2019. Now, a new theory suggests M. Night Shyamalan’s latest, Trap, may be a sequel to one of his most famous films; The Sixth Sense.
His Last Sequels Made Money, Though Critics Weren’t Always On Board
Why would M. Night Shyamalan want to do a sequel again? Well, they have performed well in the past. According to Netflix, for the week of April 1 through April 7, Glass landed at number four as the most-watched English-language movie. Split has performed well, too.
Trap
The trailer for Trap follows a father and daughter, played by Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue, as they attend a concert by a pop sensation. Picture Taylor Swift, only in Trap, the star is named Lady Raven who is actually portrayed by Night’s real-life daughter, R&B singer Saleka.
In the trailer, Hartnett leaves his daughter at her seat so he can go to the bathroom, only to find out federal agents have surrounded the venue, looking for a serial killer known as “The Butcher”. At first, Hartnett seems like a good, concerned father, but (twist time!) it turns out he is The Butcher.
The Theory: A Ghost Snitched On Josh Hartnett
A writer for Cinemablend is the source of the theory that Trap is an M. Night Shyamalan sequel to The Sixth Sense. The writer asks how federal agents know that The Butcher is going to be at the concert at that exact moment in time and floats the theory that a ghost of one of the The Butcher’s victims spreads the word of his whereabouts.
The theory is that Cole Sear, Haley Joel Osment’s memorable character from The Sixth Sense is now grown up, still speaking to dead people and helping to catch their killers. Maybe Cole is speaking to The Butcher’s victims in ghost-form.
The Sixth Sense
You will remember that in The Sixth Sense, Mischa Barton’s character talks to young Cole after her death, letting him know that her own mother poisoned her, and is also poisoning her sister. Cole then tells the girls’ father the unbelievable news.
Fathers And Daughters
M. Night Shyamalan says that Trap, centering on a father and his daughter, was inspired by his close bond with his own three daughters. You know, without the whole serial killer part.
Fun fact: Night’s daughter Ishana Shyamalan is a writer/director herself. She directed and co-wrote The Watchers starring Dakota Fanning, which is coming out in June.
The Trap Is Set For August
As for Trap, audiences are anxiously awaiting its release on August 9 and they will have to see it in a theater. Where many other filmmakers have made the move to streaming, Shyalaman has stuck with theatrical releases for his films.
Trap stars Josh Hartnett, who stepped away from Hollywood in 2010/2011, but has come back in a big way recently with the popular tv series Black Mirror and award show darling Oppenheimer in which he played Ernest Lawrence.
