Transformers One

The Transformers movie franchise has been lacking for a while now, but it looks like fans are finally going to get the Transformers movie we’ve been waiting for with Transformers One. At San Diego Comic-Con, stars Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and director Josh Cooley released a new trailer to give us our best look at the movie yet. The trailer also gave us a good look at Starscream, who was revealed to be voiced by Steve Buscemi.

Get in on the action by checking out the trailer below:

Di Bonaventura revealed that Transformers One takes place 3 billion years before the main events of the franchise, so it’s truly taking things back to the beginning. The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron when they lived on Cybertron and were best friends. The film will chronicle the fracturing of that relationship leading to them becoming the enemies we know today.

While some of the Michael Bay-era films were entertaining and the last two feature films were relatively well-received, something about seeing these classic characters animated feels right in comparison.

Along with Hemsworth and Henry, Transformers One stars Keegan-Michael Key as B-127 aka Bumblebee before losing his voice box, Scarlett Johansson as Elita, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, and Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime. The last animated film for Transformers was nearly four decades ago, and it’s good to see the franchise finally returning to its animated roots like the classic 80s series. While some of the Michael Bay-era films were entertaining and the last two feature films were relatively well-received, something about seeing these classic characters animated feels right in comparison.

Needless to say, the gorgeous animation, the all-star cast, and the clear love for the history of the franchise are all good reasons to be hyped for this film.

Those in attendance at Comic-Con got to see some additional clips of Transformers One that we only got to glimpse in the trailer. One clip was Orion Pax and D-16 (aka Optimus Prime and Megatron) competing in a competitive Transformers race despite just being a couple of miners. The film is giving us a chance to see Cybertron in its heyday, which is an era that fans haven’t really seen portrayed on screen.

Another extended Transformers One clip that we glimpse in the trailer is Alpha Trion giving Orion, D-16, Elita, and B-127 cogs that give them the ability to transform, followed by a chase scene where they try to get used to their new transforming abilities. Finally, the last clip at Comic-Con showed the High Guard, eventually the Decepticons, led by Starscream.

Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) and Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) in Transformers One, slated for a September 20, 2024 release

The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron when they lived on Cybertron and were best friends.

Of course, we all know who the High Guard eventually ends up following, but it’ll be cool to see this all go down when Transformers One eventually hits theaters. Needless to say, the gorgeous animation, the all-star cast, and the clear love for the history of the franchise are all good reasons to be hyped for this film. While the live-action franchise got some goodwill back with the recent Rise of the Beasts and the tease of a GI Joe crossover, it still has some work to do to get back in the good graces of fans.

Transformers One is just a couple of months away now. The film hits theaters on September 20. If this film ends up being as good as it looks, we could hopefully be seeing a lot more animated Transformers projects in the future.
