Top Gun: Maverick Is Already Smashing Streaming Records
Top Gun: Maverick has already topped Sonic the Hedgehog's streaming record by 60% on Paramount+.
Top Gun: Maverick surpassed all expectations at the box office, so it’s no surprise that it’s doing the same thing on the streaming platforms. Deadline reported that the film recently hit Paramount+ and soared past Sonic the Hedgehog‘s record for premiere weekend viewership record by 60%. While Paramount has not released official viewership numbers, there had to be quite a few people streaming the film to make it their most-watched domestic debut on the platform.
Top Gun: Maverick has smashed so many records for Tom Cruise that he might need a trophy case just for this movie. Along with this impressive Paramount+ record, it was also the film that nabbed Cruise his highest opening weekend and the first film in his catalog that crossed the loft $1 billion box office mark. Specifically, the film has grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
Top Gun: Maverick‘s impending release on Paramount+ also inspired many to revisit (or see for the first time) the original Top Gun, boosting its streaming numbers by 400%. Along with hitting Paramount+ in the US and Canada, the Top Gun sequel is also streaming in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the UK, and Latin America. South Korea and France will get streaming access in 2023.
It will be interesting to see how Top Gun: Maverick continues to perform on Paramount+ in the upcoming months. Presumably, it’ll maintain these high streaming numbers for a little longer before it drops in the rankings. Regardless, it seems like Tom Cruise and his Top Gun sequel aren’t ready to stop winning yet.
Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom Cruise return to Top Gun to train a new batch of graduates to take on an incredibly dangerous mission — one they might not come back from. Along with Tom Cruise, the movie stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. Along with its impressive box office success, the film has also garnered largely positive reviews.
With all the success of Top Gun: Maverick, it wouldn’t be surprising if the studios and producers were considering a third movie in the franchise. Even without Tom Cruise as Maverick, a third film could easily follow the newly established characters and bring audiences back for another ride in the cockpit. The film was produced by Paramount Pictures, Skydance, and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, so we’ll have to see if they want to bring the franchise back for another go.
With the critical and commercial success of Top Gun: Maverick, it’s hard to imagine that the studios wouldn’t want to continue expanding the franchise. In the meantime, you can go to Paramount+ to stream the film if you didn’t check it out in theaters. You can also look forward to Cruise’s next set of films, as he returns to the Mission: Impossible franchise with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One in the Summer of 2023.
