There’s no stopping Top Gun: Maverick. The Tom Cruise blockbuster has been breaking records left and right ever since its release, and that trend is still going on months later. The latest record that Top Gun: Maverick can add to its accolades is becoming the number one best-selling digital sell-through title ever in the U.S. in its first week of release, according to Paramount.

This isn’t the first digital sales record that Top Gun: Maverick smashed since it became available to home audiences. It is already one of the top 20 best-selling digital releases in history and it has been the top-selling item on Amazon in the US since it was released. It has also been the top-selling item on Fandango’s Vudu service since it hit that platform. While these records are impressive, they’re not necessarily surprising. The Top Gun sequel absolutely blew away expectations at the box office, so it’s no shock that people are watching it from the comfort of home.

Top Gun: Maverick soared past the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, raking in over $1.4 billion total. At the domestic box office, it became the sixth highest-grossing film in domestic box office history with an impressive $694 million and counting. It is also the number one release domestically this year. Top Gun: Maverick is still in theaters, so its number could become even more eye-popping before it’s no longer playing on the big screen.

Top Gun: Maverick has been a huge personal record breaker for Tom Cruise as well. It easily became the biggest opening weekend for the Hollywood leading man by pulling in $126 million. It’s also Cruise’s first movie to surpass the $1 billion mark, making it his personal highest-grossing movie. Top Gun: Maverick saw Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returning to Top Gun Academy to train a new batch of pilots for a seemingly impossible mission. Amongst the potential mission pilots is Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick’s deceased RO Goose. Top Gun: Maverick was directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Peter Craig. Alongside Cruise and Teller, the cast included Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Monica Barbaro, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Kara Wang, Greg Tarzan Davis, and more.

Top Gun: Maverick still has more potential records to break. It’s coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on November 1, so it shouldn’t be surprising if it breaks some sales records there. As for Tom Cruise, he should clear a pretty penny for his work on the movie and the financial expectations it’s been shattering. In the meantime, Cruise is working on his next major blockbuster with Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One and Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part Two. You can always count on Cruise’s Mission Impossible franchise to feature some insane stunts done by Cruise himself. You can also count on the franchise to bring in a huge audience to the theaters. You can check out Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One when it hits theaters on July 14, 2023.
