Top Gun: Maverick Set Another Impossible Record
Top Gun: Maverick is now Japan's highest-grossing Tom Cruise film.
Top Gun: Maverick has set yet another box office record a year after its release. According to Deadline, the film has earned $101.5 million in Japan, making it the highest-grossing Tom Cruise movie in the region. The movie, which is still playing in Japanese theaters, has also secured its position among the all-time Top 10 highest-grossing Hollywood releases.
To date, the worldwide cumulative box office for Top Gun: Maverick stands at an impressive $1.496 billion, with international markets contributing a significant $776.9 million. The film has performed exceptionally well in the top five markets, which include the United Kingdom with $103.5 million, Japan with $101.5 million, Korea with $67.5 million, Australia with $65.4 million, and France with $59.8 million.
Top Gun: Maverick has garnered critical acclaim and positive reception from audiences, as it skillfully introduces fresh elements while staying true to the original film’s legacy. The story focuses on Tom Cruise’s iconic character, Maverick, his evolving dynamics with Rooster (Miles Teller), and his lingering guilt about Goose’s death.
These perfectly blended elements deliver a sequel that resonates with viewers on a meaningful level. Due to the remarkable box office success of Top Gun: Maverick, it would hardly come as a surprise if plans for a third installment were in motion. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has yet to give the green light to the idea of another film.
When Bruckheimer was asked about the potential future of Top Gun: Maverick at the BAFTA Awards, the renowned producer expressed a sense of cautious optimism. He explained that the primary challenge revolves around Tom Cruise’s exceptionally demanding filming schedule for the ongoing Mission: Impossible franchise.
“He’s in the middle of shooting Mission: Impossible. He’s got a lot of very difficult, hard stunts he’s doing. It’s not the time to take attention away from what’s important to him right now,” Bruckheimer told the press, highlighting the need to respect Cruise’s commitments and the intricate nature of his other film projects.
While there is no official confirmation of a Top Gun: Maverick sequel for now, it seems unlikely that Paramount would let Tom Cruise’s latest outing as the iconic character be his last. Especially since the sequel reignited the fervor of the original film, which first graced the big screens a staggering 36 years ago. Fans were also treated to the return of Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
During the global pandemic, multiple streaming platforms attempted to acquire the rights to Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount. However, their efforts were rejected on instruction from Tom Cruise. He was steadfast in his decision to ensure that the film would exclusively premiere in theaters, a stance that has paid off in the long run.
Tom Cruise will next be seen in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh installment in the series. The movie, written, produced, and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, also stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Henry Czerny. It is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 12.
