Top Gun 3 Confirmed By Director?
Director Joseph Kosinski said there would be a chance for a Top Gun 3 if they could find a compelling enough story.
Tom Cruise is no stranger when it comes to performing his own stunts, and a simple video search will bring up plenty of footage of the 60-year-old actor scaling and jumping between buildings and hanging off the side of an airplane. With that said, he was totally game to perform the crazy aerial stunts seen in Top Gun: Maverick, and in fact, he and the rest of the cast participated in a brutal training course so they would be prepared to shoot the film’s stunts in real time. While speaking with Deadline about the intense training the stars underwent for the sequel, director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jeremy Bruckheimer teased the possibility of Top Gun 3.
During Deadline’s Contenders LA3C panel, Kosinski and Bruckheimer discussed the taxing filming process of Top Gun: Maverick and how the actors pushed themselves to their physical limits in order to make a truly genuine movie. Considering the sequel’s critical and financial success, it comes as no surprise that the two were eventually asked about the possibility of Top Gun 3. According to Kosinski, it all comes down to finding a captivating story.
Fans have waited a whopping 35 years for Top Gun: Maverick and the wait for Top Gun 3 could be just as lengthy, if not longer. The story is a major priority, and if there’s not a compelling narrative to tell, Kosinski doesn’t see a need to revisit the series. Of course, if there is a story that’s worth exploring, the director is undoubtedly open to revisiting the franchise.
“Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back? It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank,” said Kosinski. Although his remarks suggest that fans shouldn’t hold their breath for Top Gun 3 to arrive anytime soon, we’re glad the director hasn’t completely written off the possibility of Tom Cruise suiting up as our favorite naval pilot somewhere down the road.
Speaking of Tom Cruise, the Oscar-winning actor will reportedly have the final say when it comes to Top Gun 3. Back in October, Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni broke the scoop that the star will ultimately decide whether a third entry in the explosive franchise gets the green light. Since he’s currently busy with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One and Two, Cruise likely hasn’t had time to put much thought into revisiting the Top Gun series.
The wait for Top Gun 3 could prove to be a long one, but fortunately, fans can bide their time reliving Top Gun: Maverick in all its stunning glory. Although the hit sequel recently concluded its theatrical re-release on December 15, where it added more dough to its already massive global box office haul of $1.4 billion, it’s currently available to watch on home entertainment. Additionally, the film is scheduled to land on Paramount+ on December 22, just in time for Christmas.
Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Charles Parnell, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Danny Ramirez. So far, none of the cast has discussed Top Gun 3, at least not in the public eye. Nevertheless, should a third entry ever happen in the near future, we expect to see some familiar faces.
