The website landing page belonging to the Tomb Raider anime series has been removed by Netflix. The move, which coincides with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, has left fans wondering if the show has been canceled or put on hold indefinitely. According to SportsKeeda, Hayley Atwell, the actress voicing Lara Croft, was seen joining the strike internationally toward the end of July.

This development comes just months after showrunner Tasha Huo confirmed that the Tomb Raider anime was still in production. Announced in January 2021, the series was said to continue the story after Shadow of the Tomb Raider – the third reboot game, which debuted in 2018 for previous-generation consoles and PC.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider marked the culmination of a reboot trilogy and set the groundwork for the upcoming anime’s storyline. Interestingly, some fans are happy with the potential cancelation as they were never fond of the Tomb Raider anime concept. These concerns were prompted by a 2022 leak about an upcoming game that introduced a female love interest for Lara Croft.

A lot of people were displeased with the creative direction and expressed their disdain online. These feelings have resurfaced now that the Tomb Raider landing page has disappeared. Still, news of the show’s axing comes after several unconfirmed reports suggested that the series had been picked up for a second season before airing a single episode.

Netflix is yet to comment on the status of the Tomb Raider show. Meanwhile, Atwell is part of a growing group of international actors to show solidarity with their SAG-AFTRA counterparts. It’s unclear if her participation in the July gathering in Leicester Square, London disrupted the show.

Tomb Raider is a popular multimedia franchise that originated as a video game series and later expanded into movies. The game series, developed by Core Design and later Crystal Dynamics, centers around the adventurous archaeologist Lara Croft. The first game, released in 1996, introduced players to Lara’s daring exploits as she explored ancient tombs and solved puzzles.

The franchise underwent a successful reboot with the 2013 release of Tomb Raider, which explored Lara’s origins and evolution into a resilient adventurer. The franchise has seen both live-action and animated adaptations. The live-action film series began with Angelina Jolie portraying Lara Croft in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003.

In 2018, a movie reboot titled Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander as a younger and more relatable Lara, was released. The film aimed to align more closely with the gritty and realistic tone of the game’s 2013 reboot. The story followed Lara’s globe-trotting quests, featuring archaeological mysteries and intense action sequences.

In January 2023, Amazon Studios, an affiliate of MGM, successfully acquired the rights for a fresh film. The project is set to involve Dmitri M. Johnson and his dj2 Entertainment production company.

The film is designed to tie in with the series under development by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and a new video game from Crystal Dynamics. Together, these projects aim to create a shared Tomb Raider universe.
