We have more updates on Tom Welling's return to Smallville.

To this day, Smallville stands tall as one of the best superhero shows to ever grace television screens. In addition to making Superman a speedster the likes of which The Flash can’t even top, the long-running series took joy in building up to Tom Welling’s Clark Kent becoming Superman. When Clark Kent finally completed his transformation into the Man of Steel, the show ended. Luckily, though, the finale may not have been the last we’ve seen of the fan-favorite superhero drama.
That’s right: In a recent Instagram Live video (included below), Smallville‘s Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum, discussed the possibility of the show’s return. This video, along with a report from WeGotThisCovered, confirms our scoop on Tom Welling’s impending return to the popular WB Network (The CW) show. But if it happens, the return won’t be what some fans may have hoped for or expected. Instead, The CW is hopefully pursuing an animated revival, one that both Welling and Rosenbaum have half-jokingly discussed at conventions over the years. There was always a hint of sincerity to these discussions, so maybe the two actors have been hard at work on bringing it back for a long time.
In response to a curious fan’s question, Michael Rosenbaum mentioned Welling as an important part of how the revival would move forward. Here is his comment: “Well, Tom Welling and I had the idea of Smallville returning as an animated series, so we’ll see if it ever happens but, uh, we’ll try and get that going.” And here is the video where he mentions his plans with Tom Welling, just in case you want to hear it from Lex Luthor himself:
So as you can see, nothing super concrete was revealed here, but it does appear that interest in a Smallville animated revival is there and it is considerable. At least, it seems to be for Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum. And that may be all The CW needs to greenlight the revival. Fingers crossed this actually becomes a reality! This would be a Smallville fan’s dream, if only to see Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum butt heads again as Clark Kent/Superman and his nemesis, Lex Luthor, respectively.
But as perfect as Tom Welling was for the role of Clark Kent, there was a time when the part very nearly went to Supernatural star Jensen Ackles. That’s not surprising, and it would not have been a terrible choice. Fortunately, though, Welling ended up nabbing the role. Ackles is a fine actor, but it is difficult to imagine anyone else doing as great of a job as Tom Welling did.
It would be interesting to see how Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, and The CW resume Smallville as an animated series. The skeptic in me says it would be a difficult leap for a show that benefited greatly from its live-action approach, but hey, crazier things have been done.
Hopefully, if an animated revival does end up happening, Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum play a large role in helping it all come to life. It wouldn’t work without them. Fortunately, they seem pretty aware of that fact.
