Ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in theatres, fans of Andrew Garfield’s iteration of the titular character have been campaigning to see his return. Twitter has been a frenzy with hashtags urging Sony Pictures to #MakeTASM3. It would seem that this clamour for more Garfield web-swinging action has gained a rather high profile follower. None other than Tom Holland himself has publicly endorsed the idea of Andrew Garfield reprising the role of Spiderman.
In the video below, Tom Holland is discussing the potential of another instalment in The Amazing Spider-Man series on the Phase Zero Marvel Podcast. When asked if he would like to see Andrew Garfield return to the franchise, the current Spider-Man is quick to give his wholehearted support. You can see his reaction to the question and his admiration for his fellow actor’s reprisal in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tom Holland’s support for Garfield’s return as Spider-Man has seen a major upward spike in the ever trending hashtag that is #MakeTASM3. The idea of Garfield returning for multiple projects seemingly won’t go away. Mere months ago, Giant Freakin Robot brought to light a report from The Direct that really spun the rumour mill.
The prospect of whether this will happen is of course down to Sony Pictures and to some extent Kevin Feige and his Marvel Studios juggernaut. Spider-Man: No way Home has broken expectations like no other film of recent years, breaking box office boundaries and stunning critics alike. The film currently has grossed close to $1.8 billion worldwide and boasts a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 93%. It is clear that Tom Holland and Spider-Man are hot properties right now, and Sony Pictures along with Marvel would do well to strike whilst the iron is hot. There is no doubt thanks to Twitter, that Andrew Garfield is a piece of this puzzle.
Whether Sony Pictures gambles on continuing Garfields’s Spider-Man amidst all of Tom Holland’s success remains to be seen. It is worth noting that The Amazing Spider-Man 2, featuring Garfield was not a hit with critics and led to a major reboot in the franchise. Another factor that Sony may have to consider is that Tom Holland might make their decision for them. Not only has he now gone on to publicly endorse an Andrew Garfield led Spider-Man movie, but for some time now he has been sat on the fence regarding his own return. At the end of an interview with Deadline, alongside Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland had this to say on his future in the franchise:
“I know I love this character and I know that I am not ready to say goodbye, but if it is time for me to say goodbye, I will do so proudly, knowing that I have achieved everything I wanted to with this character. And sharing it with these boys will forever be forever one of the most special experiences of my career. So if it’s time, it’s time. If it’s not, it’s not. But at the moment I don’t know.”
It would appear at this moment in time the Spider-Man franchise is at a crossroads. Maybe there is no need to rush. The success of Spider-Man: No Way Home gives Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios immense power in which to choose the franchise’s direction, be it with Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or both. However, with great power, comes great responsibility. Fans of Holland, Garfield and Spiderman will be eagerly awaiting announcements regarding the future of everyone’s favorite web-slinger.
