Tom Holland made his big screen debut as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. While everyone has their own opinion over who plays the best on-screen Peter Parker—Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or Tobey Maguire—Marvel fans have found a new Spidey-related thing to argue about. Original photos of Holland’s Spidey Suit have resurfaced, and fans are split about what to think.

The Non-CGI Costume

While every frame that showed Tom Holland wearing the Spider-Man suit in Civil War was CGI, the British actor wore a physical prototype during production that was shot on set. With new photos of this original suit making its rounds online, fans can’t decide if the original suit that Holland actually wore was better or if the production team made a good call by going full CG in the final cut.

Very Different From The On-Screen Version

The contrast between the practical suit Tom Holland wore on set and the CGI Spider-Man suit is pretty noticeable. One striking difference lies in the intensity and prominence of the web lines on Spidey’s suit, which are darker and more pronounced in the CGI version. Additionally, the chest logo underwent a complete overhaul, with the physical version sporting a much thinner and longer black spider and the CGI version preferring a more rounded shape.

Whether you’re team physical prototype or team CGI suit, at the end of the day, we’re all just glad Tom Holland made it onto the set to play Spider-Man in the first place. Before Civil War came out in 2016, most fans didn’t believe it would happen since Sony owns the movie rights to all things Spidey-related.

It Was Fate That Led Holland To Marvel

Tom Holland being cast as Spider-Man happened late into the production of Civil War, which is partly why the creative team decided to CG his suit in the first place— because they didn’t have time to design a physical suit once the studio got the green light. While MCU president Kevin Feige wanted Spider-Man to be introduced in Civil War, the production company was in deep negotiations with Sony to make it happen. Had the talks fallen through, the plan was to put a different, unknown character in Peter Parker’s place.

Meanwhile, it was always fate for Tom Holland to play Spider-Man, whether it was for Marvel or another Sony reboot. In 2013, the actor was asked what his dream role would be, and he responded by saying how much he’d like to play the web head.

Thomas Holland, an English actor most well-known for playing Spider-Man in the Marvel movies, gained early recognition for his role in Billy Elliot the Musical after being discovered in a dance class at age nine. His film career commenced with the critically acclaimed The Impossible in 2012. He later appeared in various roles, including historical figures in In the Heart of the Sea and Wolf Hall

Tom Holland soared to international fame as Spider-Man in the MCU and has starred in six films in the franchise. He diversified his roles with projects like Uncharted, The Devil All the Time, and Cherry.
